Following the immense success of the DX7, Yamaha brought FM technology forward in numerous products. Organs, keyboards, and, of course, other synthesisers. What also happened was that alternative FM chips from Yamaha appeared with (compared to the DX7) reduced FM implementations. A popular example from that time was the TX81Z, and although it was somewhat smaller in scale compared to the DX7, that TX81Z offered alternative waveforms for the operators, something the DX7 again could not do. But yes: what remained was operating these synths. And so did other synths with the TX81Z implementation in them: the DX21, DX27 and DX100. It wasn't exactly the era of lush controls, and for many, these synths were mainly a bin of presets anyway.
