The Walrus Audio Fundamental Series Lo-Fi Delay is a fully-fledged effects pedal that transforms your familiar delays into delightfully imperfect, nostalgic echoes. With three different algorithms (AM, Murk and Echo), you can go from clear and ‘degrading’ to dark and modulating, or even to rhythmic multi-tap patterns with an analogue edge. The controls remain nice and straightforward: three sliders for Time, Feedback and Mix, plus a 3-way switch for the mode. Ideal if you want quick results without having to trawl through endless menus.

Three modes, three characters

In AM mode, you get a bright delay with high-pass filtering, slight harmonic distortion and dual wow-and-flutter modulation: perfect for dreamy leads and washy chords. Murk does exactly the opposite: dark, dense and saturated, with high-end roll-off, heavy distortion and dual low-frequency modulation for a thick, undulating ‘cloud’ that responds to your touch. And with Echo, you’re opting for analogue-inspired multi-tap delay: from compact lo-fi ambience (somewhere between echo and reverb) to smeared, syncopated patterns that weave around your playing.

Tap tempo, note division and trails

For live use, tap tempo is available via the bypass footswitch. You can choose from three tap divisions: quarter note, dotted eighth or eighth note, so your delays fall musically within the bar. The adjustable trails mode is also handy: let repeats fade out naturally when you switch the effect off, or disable trails for an immediate cut-off. What’s more, everything retains the same Fundamental style: professional-sounding, yet with an intuitive interface. Finished in black with green and off-white graphics, and designed and assembled in the USA.
