The Torso Electronics S4 is a creative crafting sampler. And what do we mean by this? No big orchestras, software can't catch up with that. The S4 is much more like a synthesiser, but using your own recordings as a basis. For those recordings, you connect a sound source to the jack inputs, but you can also use the built-in microphone. And then you can get started, with the most adventurous mindset, in a granular engine. On top of that, you are helped by an interesting 48-band filter, various effects and extensive modulation options. And remember: there are four such sample layers!
Who is the Torso Electronics S4 for?
As already indicated in the first paragraph: for conventional instrument work, the S4 is far too 'outlandish', and somewhere there is also the suspicion that S4 owners don't have that goal either. Instead, the S4 is there for experimental noises, soundscapes and other indescribable sounds that can have their role in film/games, New Age and experimental music. Let's emphasise the experimental extra: this is not a device where you lose all your energy in menu-diving. Instead, the device is very hands-on, aided by a hefty display and encoders. Some muscle-memory needs to be developed, but once mastered, you race through the possibilities like an Italian sports car - which only makes the grand experiment more fun.
