The ME-31 is a directional microphone that's highly versatile. You can use it to record lectures and meetings , or to record natural noises, etc. The rugged metal housing is durable as well as compact, so that you can easily transport the microphone. It can be held via its handle, or mounted on the accessory microphone stand. Furthermore, a windscreen is included, for outdoor use.

Wrote the following about Olympus ME-31 compact gun microphone

Hoewel ik deze kort na aanschaf met de nodige tevredenheid heb gebruikt voor het opnemen van vogelgeluiden buiten, is de microfoon na 2 maanden niet al te intensief gebruik stuk gegaan. Wel altijd netjes bewaard in de hoes, en voorzichtig mee omgegaan. Een nogal fragiel dingetje lijkt me.
