If the hairs in your bow are too smooth, you won't get great sound out of your violin - if any. For that reason, you need a block of rosin like the Stagg ROS VN3. Be sure not to use too much rosin, as this could result in a shrill sound and a lot of dust. Rosin has a shelf-life of about a year, after that it dries out and loses effectiveness.
