It was really only a matter of time before we'd see the revival of the next vintage synth. Here, Behringer present a modern, and mind you a brilliantly affordable, reissue of the classic ARP2600 - a legendary synth that came in two flavours at the time of release way back in 1971: the Blue Marvin and Gray Meanie. Since neither model has ever been mass-produced, getting your hands on the real thing means two things: first, you need really deep pockets, and second, you might want to start hoping and praying that your 50-year old synth still works. That said, let's take a closer look at this fresh and fully-functioning remake from Behringer.
The Behringer 2600
The Behringer 2600 Blue Marvin is a semi-modular synthesizer in the form of desktop module. While this design doesn't have the same level of flexibility as custom multi-module Eurorack systems, the fixed selection of modules the ARP2600 is home to has proven successful enough for veteran sound-designers to claim that this really is one of the best synths ever made. Naturally, the same selection has been loaded into this Behringer-made model and includes oscillators, envelopes, a filter, spring reverb and more. As a result, this monophonic synth effortlessly whips up fat, analogue sound.
A Few Extras
Behringer have thoughtfully built a few extras into the 2600 Blue Marvin, including an additional LFO and VCO-sync. Also, as befits a modern bit of kit, the synth features USB and MIDI ports for seamless integration into any studio set-up, allowing musicians and producers to drop old-school mono analogue sound into fresh mixes.

De ARP 2600 kloon van Behringer is een 3 VCO, 1VCF semi-modulaire monosynth en leent zich daarmee goed voor zowel laat 70's lead synth geluiden als experimentelere geluiden. De filter is erg fraai, en is een 'kloon' van Moog's 24 dB/o ladder filter. Er zijn twee (24 dB/o lowpass) filters te kiezen, maar het verschil is hier subtieler dan bij de ARP Odyssey klonen. De uitgebreide input mixer op deze filter vind ik erg plezierig, net als de grote hoeveelheid inputs voor FM/PWM. In combinatie met alle utility modules is er bijzonder veel mogelijk; er is geen analoge monosynth zo uitgebried als deze momenteel te koop.

Van te voren wist ik dat het geen makkelijk instrument is. Het is net als een viool een iets waar je echt voor moet oefenen voordat je het snapt en er de geluiden uithaald waar je naar op zoek bent. Als je er eenmaal inzit kan je met dit ding hele tracks maken met alle geluiden van percussie tot bass van leads tot effecten en met een beetje samplen strings en pads.
Nogmaals het is een instrument waar je geduld voor moet hebben en toewijding. Heel anders dan een vst waar meteen 1000 perfecte geluiden uitkomen.
Voor de prijs een koopje, weet nu al dat die nooit meer weg gaat.
