One of Zoom's best-selling multi-track recorders, the H4N has been upgraded with 32-bit float technology — enter the Zoom H4Essential. Thanks to the new tech, this 4-track recorder does away with the need to set the input level for your recordings. The H4Essential simply does that for you and will even automatically adjust the level setting for optimum results without noise or distortion. The dynamic range is always broad enough for both really loud and really quiet parts.
User-Friendly: Also For Blind and Partially Sighted Users
In addition to the audio quality, Zoom have also upgraded the user friendliness by adding audio support to the menu so that, when navigating the settings and functions, the names are called out via the built-in speaker or headphone output. This makes the H4Essential a safe pick for blind and visually impaired users.
Send Audio to Your PC or Phone
With the H4Essential, you can stream in 32-bit float while simultaneously recording to an SD card. When connected to a PC, Mac, iOS, or Android device using the USB-C port, the H4essential can be used as a 4-in/2-out audio interface. MicroSDHC/SDXC cards up to 1TB are supported.
Colour OLED Display and Bluetooth Timecode
This is the first Zoom recorder that's kitted out with a full-colour OLED display, making it particularly easy to access settings and recordings. You also have the option to pair the recorder using the BTA-1 Bluetooth Adapter (not included) to synchronise audio with video when the H4Essential is connected to a video camera via the fitted mini-jack line output or when it's connected to an iOS device.
The Perfect Tool for Interviews and Podcasts
Since the H4Essential is equipped with both an XY stereo microphone and two XLR inputs, it's perfect for podcasters, interviewers and other content creators as you're free to plug external microphones into the XLR ports and mix ambient audio with your main recordings later on. Needless to say, the whole thing is nicely compact and portable.

Voordeel van dit apparaat is dat je nauwelijks iets hoeft in te stellen ook al wordt er veel geluid geproduceerd.
Zelf vind ik wel dat je daarna het geluid weer iets moet versterken om een goed volume te krijgen.
Exporteren van bestanden gaat heel makkelijk.
Met een 64 Gb micro SDXC kaartje kun je in24 bit modus heel lang opnemen (wij nemen ons hele optreden van 3 sets makkelijk op, totaal 4 uur)
Batterij is relatief snel leeg 90 min?, wij werken echter met een powerbank en dat gaat prima.
Apparaat is lekker klein en wordt op een statief van 250 cm hoog op ongeveer 7-9 meter van de boxen geplaatst.
Bediening is relatief eenvoudig.
De Case die we mee besteld hadden vonden we niet handig, te klein om nog iets bij te stoppen (bv, powerbank). Die hebben we probleemloos teruggestuurd.
Nadeel dat wij ervaren maar waar de Zoom H4 niets aan kan doen is dat er ook veel publieksgeluid mee opgenomen wordt.

Compact in gebruik maar toch veelzijdig.

Handig is ook de ingebouwde speaker voor (minimale) afluistering van een opname. Natuurlijk is er ook een 3,5mm aansluiting voor koptelefoon.
Voeding met 2 AA batterijen, of met een USB-C kabel aan een adapter. Dat laatste is gelukkig lekker universeel. Je zou 'm op die manier zelfs met een powerbank kunnen voeden.
Een aantal 'minpunten' zijn ook wel te vinden:
- De behuizing voelt een beetje onprofessioneel-hard-plastic aan
- de opgebouwde microfoons zijn niet meer draaibaar van 90 graden naar 270 graden opnamehoek, zoals op de vorige H4n Pro wel mogelijk was
- Er zit in het menu een 'export' functie, waarmee opnames naar een export-map op de SD-kaart worden getransporteerd. Je kunt er voor het exporteren ook voor kiezen om de bestanden eventueel te normaliseren, maar waarom zou je dat in een recorder doen... Daar komt dat het exportproces bij grotere bestanden erg lang kan duren. Mijn ervaring is dat je ook prima de direct opgenomen bestanden van de SD-kaart kan kopiëren op een PC.
Alles bij elkaar wel een prima bruikbare recorder voor een zeer schappelijke prijs! Een waardige opvolger van de H4nPro. En tot mijn plezier komt er geen plastic te pas aan de verpakking!

Heel lastig om deze fieldrecorder met bijbehorende dingen te bestellen. Heb erg lang en moeizaam naar andere passende dingen moeten zoeken. Aantal zaken zijn dan helaas ook niet voorradig. Ik zeg : voor dit artikel wat meer complete uitgebreidere kant en klare pakketten aanbieden. Zonder batterijen en zonder micro sd kaartje doet de recorder namelijk niets.
Ik heb deze fieldrecorder genomen omdat een muzikale vriend deze al een paar weken gebruikte voor opnames.
Ik weet dat de kwaliteit van deze H4Essential veel beter is dan de vorige versie H4 en ook goed opneemt tijdens (harde) optredens of repeteren.
Een Minpunt vind ik ook dat er helemaal geen gebruiksaanwijzing bij zit.
Gebruiksvriendelijkheid ten aanzien van blinden en slechtzienden is hiermee enorm verbeterd.
Het past in je handpalm dus makkelijk mee te nemen.
Omdat de bestelling niet compleet geleverd is, een lange (16weken) nalevering heeft, kan ik de recorder zelf helaas nog niet testen of gebruiken.
Als nalevering over een paar weken gelukt is dan doe ik zeker later mijn gebruikers ervaring delen.
