The Ukulele

In Hawaiian, the word 'ukulele' literally translates as 'jumping flea'; describing the strumming technique needed to play a uke, and pretty much wrapping up the joyful sound of these little stringed instruments. The ukulele finds its root in the branguinha, a small guitar-like instrument that was first introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants from Madeira in 1879. Since its so small and easy to pick up, the ukulele as we know it today is popular worldwide and is just as welcome in concert halls as it is in living rooms.
