This pair of all-purpose Devine SM-500 small-diaphragm condenser microphones come complete with a set of two cardioid capsules, a set of two super-cardioid capsules and a set of two omni-directional capsules. For recording melodic acoustic instruments like a guitar or violin, simply install the cardioid capsules to ensure maximum detail, or set them up in stereo to serve as drum overheads. If you're capturing multiple instruments at once and need more separation in the sound, simply install the super-cardioid capsules which, thanks to the proximity effect, will also give the result more body. Stereo recordings will also sound broader when using the super-cardioid capsules. The omnidirectional capsule will give you the most natural sound, and in A-B stereo configurations deliver a big and airy feel - making them ideal for room mics when recording drums or even when recording classical ensembles or choirs. In short, if you need a one-shot solution that can handle everything from close-miked acoustic instruments to spacious stereo recordings, this is it.
