While more novice producers and engineers might miss the value, clocking should never be overlooked. If, for example, you're mixing 'in-the-box', your computer is continuously sending a clock signal - a really fast pulse - that plays audio at, let's say, 44.1kHz. The possible issue is that a computer is busy with a lot of background tasks, meaning that there's every chance that the clock pulse isn't capable of the level of accuracy demanded by audio engineers. Since an external clock has just one job, it can do it unhindered, and if your DAW is listening to that external clock, then you'll notice a much tighter sound - especially in the mid frequencies.
