General

An original 1973 model by Marshall might set you back thousands of Pounds, while the Marshall 1973X is just as good. It is the most accurate reproduction of the 18-watt, two-channel full-tube combo made between 1966 and 1968. Just like the original, the 1973X is fully hand-soldered and fitted with a valve-driven tremolo with a cathode-biased EL84 power valve with no negative feedback. Its two channels are nothing if not straightforward and effective. Just a volume and tone control on the first channel and volume, tone, speed and sensitivity on the tremolo channel.

Marshall 1973X: vintage sixties sound at lower volumes

As the 1973X is relatively underpowered (compared to most other Marshalls of 50 and 100 watts), its power valves will distort sooner. This means that it produces the same, harmonically rich and responsive vintage Marshall sounds at a much lower volume, which is perfect for in the studio as it requires more control over your sound. Through the years, the Celestion T1221/67 Greenback speakers in the original 1973 model gained a rounder, softer sound. By artificially aging the new 12-inch Celestion G12M-20 Greenbacks, Marshall emulated the distinctively sixties' sound.

About the Handwired series

Marshall's Handwired-series amplifiers were made to be as authentic as possible, both in look and tone. To re-create the look, feel and tone of the highly coveted original models, Marshall's team of engineers did what they could to find and/or reproduce original components and materials while revising the original construction methods to comply with modern safety standards. Down from the hand-wired stripboard circuits up to the specially made Drake transformers.
