As pioneers of computer-based music production, Steinberg's Cubase is one of the most popular DAW software programs around and is used by top music producers around the world. Steinberg listened to feedback from their customers when creating the new Cubase Artist 9. Although it's not quite as comprehensive as the Pro version, there's still more than enough here for large studio-based projects. There are many new functions including MixConsole History, which tracks all of the changes you make and lets you select previous settings from a list. This makes it easy to compare different settings and experiment more with your mixes.

Sampler Track is another new function. You can add any piece of audio to create a Sampler Track, then play it chromatically, or edit it with its on-board filters and controls. It even maps to your keyboard. Lower Zone is also new and lets you display various panels which gives you a much clearer overview and direct access to the editors and the MixConsole without having to leave the Project window. Better still, the panels can be re-sized so you can easily find the one you need whenever you need it. There are 64 audio tracks and 128 MIDI tracks, giving you plenty of room to make complex arrangements. 8 virtual instruments with over 2,600 sounds are included as well as a comprehensive effects section. In addition to the full version, there is a special version available for students.
Tips or comments about this product
- If you activated an older version of Cubase (from version 6) on or after 26th October 2016, Steinberg is offering a grace period so that you can upgrade to version 9 for free. You can do this via the Steinberg website.
