The most common type of a recorder is the soprano recorder, which is tuned in C. It is a transposed instrument, which means that it sounds an octave higher than the music notation. This recorder is made of transparent blue plastic. You'll find that the fourth hole from the top is larger than the others, which means that it has a German fingering profile. The fingering profile is important, because it affects the way that you will play different notes. For instance, on this German recorder, you'd play an F like this: thumb + 1, 2, 3 and 4. On a recorder with a baroque profile you'd play the same note in a different way: thumb + 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7.
