With its red pearwood comb, playing the Marine Band Soloist 364/24 is delightful. It feels familiar, and also adds a wonderful warm undertone to the instrument's sound. The comb measures 13.7 centimetres in length and has been thoroughly varnished several times. This ensures that moisture absorption is reduced to a minimum and thus cannot shrink and swell. Inside the comb you will find a brass tuning plate containing 24 reeds. These are distributed over the twelve blowing holes. Behind each hole are thus two reeds, each with a different tone. One will come into action when you blow on the harmonica and the other when you inhale through the harmonica. The brass reeds sound raw and bright, with a warm undertone. This diatonic Soloist 24 is a very dynamic instrument. You can produce beautiful tones when you play it subtly and at a low volume, but you can also perform those same beautiful tones when the Marine Band Soloist roars through a blues.

German company Hohner has been producing harmonicas for a century and a half, and with success! The Marine Band is certainly the most famous. This model has been sold since 1896. This version has a few more blowholes and therefore has a wider tonal spectrum. The tonal range of the Marine Band Soloist 364/24 comes to three whole octaves. This harmonica is tuned in C major. The tuning is not in the well-known Richter tuning, but in Hohner's special 'solo' tuning. This makes this harmonica extremely suitable for (fast) soloing.

A sublime sound, which has already been described, emanates from this relatively small instrument. At less than fifteen centimetres long, the Soloist's capabilities will amaze you again and again. The sound is produced by the brass reeds, which vibrate when you play the instrument. The vibrations are amplified by the stainless steel cover plates, which are attached to the sides with nails. The design of the cover plates strikes a balance between a great sound and a comfortable grip. Combined with a brass tuning plate, ditto reeds and the pearwood comb, Hohner manages to take the Marine Band Soloist 364/24 to a new level.
