You could almost call Gretsch's Broadkaster drum kits a blast from the past - if it weren't for their modern upgrades. The 2014 Vintage Build Broadkaster models breathe nostalgia, particularly the hardware. This three-piece Classic Bomber shell set has an Antique Pearl finish and consists of a 24 x 14-inch bass drum, a 13 x 9-inch tom and a 16 x 16-inch floor tom. The Broadkaster set wears the moniker Bomber with pride, so take note, rock fans!
Broadkaster Vintage Build Classic Bomber: hybrid
The BK-R443V-AP kit is up for a serious challenge. Thanks to their hybrid character - they are made of two plies of maple with a single ply of poplar in between - the thin shells produce a full, warm sound with a well-pronounced low end. Just like the gorgeous Antique Pearl finish and the choice of wood, the hardware of the shells is vintage-inspired. The Rail Consolette on the bass drum, for instance, is a remarkable and practical feature, which enables you to quickly and easily mount the 13-inch tom at the right playing position. The tom itself is equipped with a rugged plate mount with a clamp. Further inspection of the 16-inch floor tom reveals a G4823V vintage diamond clamp and 9.5mm-thick floor tom legs, which are slightly thinner than those of the Standard Build models, but certainly no less stable. The bass drum is kept securely in place by its USA G4966 vintage bass drum legs.
Hoops and bearing edges
The 6-ply maple hoops of the bass drum have matching Antique Pearl inlays and the claw hooks are fitted with vintage T-rod tension rods - another nod to days gone by and a great finishing touch to the overall great looks of the kit. The double-flanged hoops of the toms have been modelled after classic hoops, but are made from a more rugged type of steel. The shells have reverse roundover bearing edges, which means their inside edges sit higher and round off down towards the exterior edges, increasing the surface contact between shell and drumhead, resulting in a full, warm, authentic Gretsch sound.
The classic characteristics of the BK-R443V-AP shell set are combined with modern technology: all shells are equipped with internal mufflers. The bass drum's muffler is located on the resonant side of the shell.
