Opto is really one of those terms you come across in studio land. It won't mean anything to everyone, so here's a quick summary. It is a compressor that adjusts its compression to the incoming signal. Compare it to a car: automatic or shift. Under the hood there is always gear shifting, but with an automatic you don't have to do it yourself. It's the same with an opto-compressor, which is why they are often called musical compressors. Apogee FX Rack Opto-3A is such a compressor (and limiter), with just a few settings. The essentials, and nothing more. So it is a very easy plug-in to work with, because there is not much that needs to be understood. The side-chaining still contains the most in terms of knowledge. However, the results are excellent, which is why optos are always so popular!
