Epiphone Les Paul Standard Pelham Blue

Ik heb twee Epiphone Les Paul Standards. Deze Pelham Blue en een Ebony. Ik kan kan er kort over zijn: voor het geld zijn het werkelijk sublieme gitaren. Looks, afwerking, hardware, bespeelbaarheid en sound: beter kun je ze waarschijnlijk niet krijgen in deze prijsklasse. En een sustain van hier tot Tokio; geweldig!
Beide gitaren verschillen wel enigszins van elkaar: mijn Pelham LP is in 2016 in China gebouwd. De Ebony kwam in 2014 uit een Indonesische fabriek. Het verschil zit hem in de hals. Als het om bespeelbaarheid gaat dan heeft de Ebony-variant uit Indonesië mijn voorkeur. Maar dat is natuurlijk persoonlijk. Wel een factor om rekening mee te houden. Even een exemplaar uitproberen in de shop.
'Af fabriek' zijn de Epiphone LP's dus meer dan uitstekende gitaren. Toch ben ik mee aan het knutselen gegaan. Ik heb de (verder prima klinkende) humbuckers vervangen door exemplaren van Iron Gear. Top pick ups uit Engeland voor relatief bescheiden prijzen die kunnen wedijveren met die van de Grote Jongens. Google er maar eens op. De Ebony heb ik voorzien van hun 'Blues engine/Dirty torque'-set; de Pelham Blue van de 'Hot slag/Rolling mill'-combinatie.
Verder heb ik alle elektronica vervangen. Nieuwe pots, nieuwe bedrading, andere capacitor en een nieuwe schakelaar. Die laatste is het enige zwakke punt(je) dat ik heb kunnen ontdekken. De schakelaar is niet echt duurzaam. Switchcraft levert een degelijk alternatief.
Een roller saddle bridge en een Graph Tech topkam zijn de kersen op de taart.
De Grover-mechanieken heb ik laten zitten. Die doen hun werk voortreffelijk.
Het resultaat? Twee beulen van gitaren die qua sound en 'feel' op geen enkele manier onder doen voor een veel duurdere Gibson.
Een absolute aanrader, deze Les Paul: rechtstreeks 'uit de doos' of als basis voor aanpassingen. Ik zeg: kopen!
