The EVH Wolfgang Special is a great choice if you want to get your hands on a guitar designed by guitar legend Eddie Van Halen. Besides being an absolute guitar virtuoso, Eddie was also responsible for a number of innovations in guitar making. It was he who fitted his ST-model guitar with a humbucker, single-handedly causing a revolution in the guitar world. Since then, he's been on a constant search for the ultimate guitar; a quest that has culminated in the EVH Wolfgang series, of which this model is one of the more affordable versions. Worth noting, though, is that the gold-coloured Wolfgang Special shares a lot of features with Eddie's personal Wolfgang guitar. In short, the EVH Wolfgang Special Gold has a striking look that matches its excellent performance.

A touch of Eddie

The Wolfgang Special Gold has a basswood body with a comfortable heel, that means even the highest frets are easy to reach. Two specially designed humbuckers are mounted directly to the body for optimal resonance. Meanwhile, the neck also shows Eddie's influence, as it features a compound-radius fretboard and an oiled finish for optimal playing comfort. Finally, a guitar like this needs a double-locking tremolo (a Floyd Rose, no less), and like a good Wolfgang, it's even got the EVH D-Tuna system that allows you to tune down to Drop D and back in the blink of an eye.

Unique electronics

Contrary to what you may expect, Eddie Van Halen actually prefers medium output humbuckers. As such, the specially-designed Wolfgang Humbuckers deliver just the right sound – they are both exceptionally musical and responsive with biting trebles, well-defined mids and impressive bass. What's more, thanks to these medium output pickups, the Wolfgang Special is much more versatile than a guitar with high output pickups would be. From screaming leads to fat metal riffs, and from classic rock to sugar-sweet ballads, the EVH Wolfgang special does it all! Finally, the tone controls are well thought-out and the low-friction volume control allows for those famous violin effects.
