The face of the next-gen guitar deities, the musician, producer and prolific writer Steve Lacy lays his take on the Fender Stratocaster on the world at large. As well as his solo work, you can hear Lacy's mark all over the albums by The Internet and the tracks he co-penned for names like J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Solange Knowles. Like a sonic painter, Lacy plays with multiple vocal lines, woven over lo-fi effects and psychedelic arrangements to hypnotic effect.
The Fender Steve Lacy People Pleaser Stratocaster: The One-Off
On first glance, this Strat doesn't stray too far from tradition, but the Chaos Burst paint-job, the mother-of-pearl position dots of the maple fretboard and the double-six dice inlay at the twelfth fret truly serve to set this model apart. The solid alder body has been kitted out with a set of Player Plus Noiseless Strat pickups to support a full range of friendly and familiar Fender-grade sounds, but the real twist here comes in the form of an S-1 switch that can be toggled to open up the built-in Chaos Fuzz circuit and completely change up the output. Built from the ground up to give the people what they want, the Fender People Pleaser Strat comes tucked up inside its very own vintage-style case.

Op wat vlekken na en heeeeeeluh oude snaren erop - 1 was blijkbaar gebroken en vervangen zonder de andere 5 snaren ook ff te wisselen - kwam de stratocaster met wat gekruld folie uit de prachtige hardcase met de kerstgroene pluche.
Wat meteen opvalt is de kwaliteit van de gebruikte materialen.
-Prachtige maple neck met de trussrod bout aan de onderkant van de hals, gepimpt met de double dice op de 12e fret, deep C greep maar niet te dikke neck, aanslag van de oxiderende snaren op de overigens subliem afgewerkte frets. Niet echt narrow tall zoals ik ze ken, iets platter en daardoor toch nog geschikt voor bends. Handtekening van Steve achter op de headstock. Vintage tuners met gelukkig kleine draaiknoppen. Werken perfect.
-Subliem afgewerkte Chaos Burst body met een hele mooie nerf door de lak heen te zien. Dikke tremblok volgens mij van gewalst staal, correct aangebrachte tremklauw met kwalitatief goede spanveren, waaronder je de kwaliteit van het gebruikte hout nog kunt bewonderen. Mooie neckplate met serienummer. Goede tremolo brug met stamped saddles. Er zit netjes een spiraalveetje in de pocket voor de whammy bar met een stickertje erop zodat ie er niet uitvalt.
De elektronika is 3 noiseless alnico pickups alhoewel niet helemaal noiseless, volgens mij heeft dat te maken met een slechte ground verbinding op de body ga ik nakijken. Mooi fris strat geluid klinkt er uit de pickups alhoewel ik ze wellicht nog ga wisselen voor ML Vintage pickups die ik nog had liggen. De S1 button met de batterij aangedreven Fuzz Boost is werkelijk supersonisch, wow! Mijn advies, ga dat niet testen op je mixer of een koptelefoon maar stomp het echt over de buizenversterker de ether in!
Al met al speelt deze “People Pleaser”, of “Fuzzy Bear” zoals ik hem gedoopt heb, na een snarenwissel, intonatie en floating zetten van de tremolo wonderbaarlijk smooth en snel. Na een half uurtje is de vingerzetting aangepast en kun je echt hele mooie kunststukjes doen, varierend van super jazzy tot hee luh maahl freakin’ fuzz Stevie Ray Vaugh.
Voor deze munten is deze in Ensenada MEX gebouwde signature strat iets heel bijzonders.
