General

If you'd love to own a vintage Fender '60s Jazzmaster, but find the price just too high, this model from Fender's Mexican Vintera series could be the answer. It has an authentic look, sound and feel, yet you get all of the advantages of owning a brand new, modern instrument too. It's comfortable to play and has excellent tuning stability.

Vintera 60s Jazzmaster: feel & sound

The thin C neck profile and 7.25-inch fretboard radius give this Fender a familiar feel. For a genuine '60s sound, it's equipped with two Vintage-Style '60s Single-Coil Jazzmaster pickups. Despite their name, they're perhaps better suited to music styles like surf and rock n' roll rather than jazz. You'll also find lead and rhythm circuit control knobs on this electric guitar. The bridge saddle for each string is individually adjustable and there's also a floating tailpiece that allows you to add atmospheric vibrato to your playing.

When this guitar works, it sounds fantastic and has an amazing feel to it. The single coil pickups are incredible and the range with all the different settings makes it super versatile. I absolutely love this guitar, when it's not falling to bits. Whoever built it needs to be sacked. When I first got it, the tone wheel for the rhythm circuit was completely loose so I couldn't adjust and I immediately noticed how flimsy the bridge was, however I just assumed it was it was due to me overplaying it (I practice atleast an hour or two a day and a gig semi-regularly) however the shoddiness of its assembly has reached levels where it's taking the piss. On multiple occasions the action for my strings has completely collapsed, causing some solos for my gigs to be completely ruined and cutting many band-jams and recordings short as I've had to fix it. I would trust a bridge made out of Lego or twigs more that the standard bridge that comes with this guitar.

Another burning issue I've had with this guitar is the floating trem. During my first 4 months it was great. I play a lot of shoegaze so I use it quite a bit and when it's in working order, it's just what you want. However after 4 months or so, the whole unit began to just fall apart. Meaning that I've had to take the whole trem apart to reassemble it. This has started to happen at least once a week now. I'm a guitar player who gigs at pubs a couple of weekends a month, not a professional guitar tech, I shouldn't have to be doing this level of maintenance for a guitar that costs as much as it does.

Additionally, the amount of grounding issues and re-soldering I've had done to it in this amount of time has been absurd. Its been to repair shops more time in 6 months than my epiphone Les Paul has been in 6 years.

At this price and with it being under the Fender name you would expect it to be top-quality however this is far from it. I am thoroughly disappointed with this guitar and I wish I got something else.

The guitar looks amazing and sounds pretty cool as well. Once it works. I was pretty surprised to see that the bridge pickup on mine was not functioning at all. Luckily everything got fixed with minor welding work, but still, you shouldn't be supposed to open and work on a brand new Fender guitar straight out of the box.
