General

EMG is known for its more than excellent active guitar pickups, of which the 81 and 85 in particular are wildly popular. Yet there are many guitarists who also like passive pickups, and to offer something for everyone, there is the EMG Retro Active series. The design and sound are true to traditional humbuckers, including the open-coil design. With its alnico magnets, the Fat 55 is inspired by classic humbuckers from the 50s and 60s. The sound is therefore nice and full, but also definitely clear, and can be used in all kinds of genres, with the advantages of active pickups: low impedance with a quiet and clean signal.

Retro Active Fat 55 with Quick Connect

To get started quickly with your new, active humbuckers, EMG supplies the electronics right away. The potentiometers have a short shaft, suitable for ST-style guitars and guitars with a relatively thin top, among others. An element switch is not included. If you choose a passive switch, for instance the one already in your guitar, you will have to attach it by soldering. EMG also offers separately available element switches with Quick Connect.
