You've basically got two options when it comes to supporting a digital piano: a universal keyboard-style stand or a made-to-measure frame. Stands are more affordable and make it easier to move or store your piano while, if available, a matching frame is a more deluxe solution that in some cases even comes pre-fitted with a pedal unit, allowing you to turn a digital piano into a living room centrepiece resembling a real acoustic upright. A matching frame can be picked up along with the piano, or bought sometime down the road if you'd rather spread out the costs.
A Deluxe Frame or a Low-Cost Stand for Your Digital or Stage Piano
If it's available for the make and model of your digital piano, a made-to-measure frame will match the instrument in terms of style, forming a beautiful whole that you could even polish off with the perfect piano bench. If there's no special stand available for your piano or if it's simply too big or too big expensive, have a look at our range of universal stands. These are available in various forms - including X-style, Z-style, column and table-style models - and make for a solid alternative - just don't forget to make sure that your new stand has the right weight-bearing capacity and dimensions to take your piano.
From Double X to Column Keyboard Stands
Simple, affordable and typically foldable, X-style models are the most popular keyboard stands in our range, though they're not as rugged as Z-style stands, which are better suited for a more permanent set-up in a studio. Some Z-stands can even be expanded with an extra set of support arms to create a second tier for an additional keyboard or synthesizer. Then there's the table-style stand, which boasts the advantage of not having any crossbeams, giving you more leg room. On the other hand, some table-style stands feature a built-in pull-out mechanism and these models in fact do have crossbeams. Lastly, there's the column stand. While they might not seem all that sturdy at first glance, don't be fooled - column keyboard stands are seriously strong. For more, see our complete range of Keyboard Stands.
The Importance of Set-Up Height
The optimum way to play a keyboard requires matching the height with the position of your arms. If you're seated too low or if the keyboard sits too high, this will eventually lead to muscle and joint pains. Luckily, the right stand or frame can help you maintain proper posture. Here, Z-style stands, table stands and column stands are always a safe choice, but the height of any X-style stand depends on the way it's set up. Set one up too low and the support arms will sit too far apart to hold your keyboard, which is something to keep in mind if you're thinking about going for an X-style keyboard stand. Also bear in mind that if you have an extremely compact keyboard like a MIDI keyboard, you most likely won't be able to use any traditional keyboard stand with it.
