What’s the Best Stand for My Keyboard, Piano or Synth?
Playing a keyboard, digital piano, or synthesizer is much more comfortable when it’s on a stand. But what kind of stand is the best choice for your instrument? This Buyer’s Guide offers a few handy stand-based tips to make picking out the right one a bit easier. If you can’t find the answer to your particular question here, feel free to contact us!

1. How Strong Should My Stand Be?
Keyboard players that play at home won’t necessarily need the most expensive stand going for their piano, keyboard, or synthesizer. Most of the time, you’ll just unfold your stand, set it up in a corner and never move it again.
If you regularly perform or need to pack up, adjust or move your stand around a lot, then you’re more likely to need a more expensive, stronger stand that’s designed to be easily folded up and out again and again, and can take a knock or two.
Generally, the price of a stand is a good indication of how strong it is.
2. What Shape Should My Stand Be?
The most well-known stands are X-style stands. These are made up of two supporting struts that form the shape of an ‘X’ when the stand is set up. These stands are easy to fold up.
The sides of a Z-style stand forms the shape of a ‘Z’. These stands have a reinforced frame for improved stability and are therefore a little more difficult and time-consuming to assemble and pack up since they’re made up of larger separate parts. Z-style stands do give you more open leg-room, and due to the construction and weight distribution, tend to be much more stable.
Stands with a column-style design are often used for a multi-keyboard set-up. These stands take up very little space and look great on stage.
Table-style stands are also very stable, offer a lot of leg-room, and the instrument is placed and often secured on a rectangular top.
There are some stands that have been specifically designed for one kind of keyboard, piano, or synth. In most cases, recesses built into the instrument itself neatly slot onto or into the compatible stand. For more information about these, see Question 6.

3. What Maximum Weight Capacity Should My Stand Have?
Of course, your stand needs to be able to carry the weight of your instrument. Most keyboards, pianos, and synthesizers are lighter than 20kg and most stands will be designed to carry this kind of weight. Stands with a high weight capacity tend to have a more durable build and are really strong and stable. If you have a particularly heavy stage piano, then make sure to match its weight to the maximum weight capacity of the stand you’re thinking about getting, this way you’ll be absolutely certain that it’ll be able to safely handle the weight. This information can usually be found in the specifications of any stand.

4. What If My Keyboard/Piano/Synth Has Different Dimensions?
If you have a keyboard that’s particularly small or shallow, then most stands are still likely to fit but may not be so easy to use. For example: say that you place a really small keyboard on a normal X-style stand. Because of its design, the stand would need to be set really high so that the keyboard fits, which may not be the most comfortable playing position and you probably won’t be able to sit to play. So if you know that your instrument doesn’t have average dimensions, double check the specifications of any stand you’re interested in. If you have any doubts, feel free to contact us and one of our product specialists will be glad to help you find a stand that fits.

5. How Many Levels Should My Stand Have?
By levels, we mean the amount of instruments a single stand can take. Most stands will have just one level, and for musicians that use two or even three instruments, there are stands available with multiple levels so that all of their keyboards, stage pianos, or synths can be set up on one stand. Most beginners are only likely to need a stand with one level.
Some stands can be expanded with an extra level, so if your set-up gets bigger in the future, you can easily add a second or even a third instrument to a single stand by getting the compatible expansion pack or component. These can be extra arms for another keyboard, synth, or piano, or even an add-on so you can mount a music rest, tablet, or other gear. These can be found under stand accessories.
Tip: If a specific stand can be expanded, then you’ll almost always find the compatible expansion gear listed under the bundle deals found lower down the product page.

6. Is There a Stand That’s Specifically Designed for My Instrument?
For most digital pianos that don’t come with a stand, there’ll be a compatible frame or stand that can be bought separately. The benefit of using a specially designed stand is that, since the stand is literally made-to-measure, your instrument will definitely fit perfectly, have a stable base, and look really neat. Frames and stands that have been specifically designed for certain digital piano models can be found under Piano Stands.
Specially designed stands are also available for some specific keyboard models.
Tip: On the product page of pretty much every keyboard, piano or synth that has a specially designed stand available, you can find the stand listed under the bundle deals lower down the page. If you know that there is a stand that has been specifically designed for your model but you can’t find it on our site, then you can always complete a Product Request form and we’ll see if we can order it in for you.
