The Nektar Impact GX49 49-key USB/MIDI keyboard is the successor of the popular Impact iX49. As such, its roots are clearly visible, but like any good sequel, the GX is bigger and better than its predecessor! On the left of the keyboard, you'll find the pitch and modulation wheels, the transpose buttons and a redesigned transport section. More buttons means more possibilities, and one of the images describes a few of these possibilities for a couple of DAW packages. The GX certainly is a strong contender in its price class!
The GX49 is powered entirely by USB, and as such, it works with all USB devices that feature a Class Compliant MIDI driver. Of course, that means it's compatible with most common operating systems, like Windows XP (or newer) and OS X 10.5 (or newer) It also supports Linux, but only if there's a USB MIDI driver installed. You can also use the GX with an iPad if you use the separately available USB Camera Kit. As the iPad will also power the Nektar Impact, you'll be able to work with this keyboard no matter where you are at the time.
The Bitwig 8-Track software package is included at no additional charge, making the investment even more appealing that it already was. Bitwig 8-Track is an entry-level DAW that allows you to start producing music right away. All you'll need is a computer, and the GX will turn it into a full-fledged music production station! The 8-Track version of Bitwig is a slimmed-down version of Bitwig Studio, but it offers plenty of possibilities to keep you happy for quite a while. Beginner producers, especially, will enjoy this DAW's streamlined interface. Taking your first steps will be daunting enough, so having a DAW that makes it easier for you is a great boon!
