General
Keyboard controllers are now more popular than ever. 88-key versions, however, frequently lag behind their smaller sized counterparts. Studiologic's SL88 Grand USB/MIDI keyboard featuring 88 keys is about to change all that though. Just ask any pianist and they'll tell you that more keys offer a number of advantages. In recording situations for example, a full range of keys is much better when playing parts for pianos, organs, harps, strings, brass sections, choirs and even drums.
Properties of the Studiologic SL88 Grand
One of the most striking features on this controller has to be the 320x240 pixel colour display which is not a feature you normally see on master keyboards like this. You can use it set MIDI zones together with the controller knob. The control panel is well laid out with an innovate system known as Magnetic Rail allowing to easily add an extension plate to hold a laptop or tablet. On the left hand side are three stick controllers that can be used during performances as well as for direct control and manipulation of any desired sound parameter. The first stick is spring loaded in two directions which means that it will automatically return to the middle when released making it perfect for pitch and modulation control. The second stick is spring loaded in the horizontal position only, while the third stick is completely free making it most suitable for panning, cross fading and parameter control.
Other features
A top-end keyboard like this deserves top-quality keys too, and the SL88 doesn't disappoint. It features the best-graded hammer action keybed with Ivory Touch and wooden keys. Another feature you might not expect on a keyboard such as this is Aftertouch, but of course, the SL88 has it. This feature might not be so important when playing piano parts but for playing virtual synthesizers, it's worth its weight in gold. The keyboard, made by Fater, is extremely accurate and highly configurable allowing you to adjust the dynamics of individual keys or the dynamic balance between the black and white keys for instance. All in all, the SL88 is a master keyboard that's destined to become a real winner in the studio world.
