General

What... have they... come up with again at Playtronica! Is it a dartboard? No, and strange as it may seem, what it is is a lot less strange than you might think. For years we have had DAW software with all kinds of plug-ins, paid or free. These can include little phrase sequencers. A kind of x0x loop, in other words. Manufacturers do everything they can to stand out a bit, so over the decades these simple concepts have been made in numerous versions. The Orbita is another such version; round, like a kind of turntable in other words. But this here is hardware, not software. Indeed, 'hardware' doesn't even really cover it here, 'tis much more physical than a regular studio product.

Features of the Playtronica Orbita

You place small magnetic circles/caps on a platter, with each colour representing a specific pitch. The rings on the platter represent octaves. Rotating the platter is the speed of your phrase. In short, you take colour into account, radius relative to the centre, and position along the circumference. So it's a very distinctive way of making sequences, perhaps this is also a very playful way to teach sequencing to the kids! Finally, how do we get sound with this? Quite simply: via USB-C MIDI. And so then you can control a virtual instrument, via a DAW or not. And if your virtual instrument is a drum kit, then the Orbita is a kind of indirect drum computer. Just like classic DJing: you can brake the platter a bit with your hands, thus tweaking the rotation and thus the sequence speed.

For whom?

The kids have already been mentioned, it's quite a fun toy with more possibilities than you might initially suspect. In combination with DAW software and/or virtual instruments, though, so the kids have to be able to stay in daddy's man-cave, where daddy is condemned not to disturb mummy. But, it's also quite fun to use as a performance on the street, and so we're targeting street-performers. Ergo, a very unlikely fun product; who could see this coming?

Tips or comments about this product

  • Note: this device does not make any sound itself, you need a MIDI sound source (via 3.5 mm or USB-C) to hear anything, such as a synth or DAW software.
