General
Horn players sooner or later have to use the stopping technique, which involves adjusting the sound by putting the hand into the horn and thus manually muting it there. You can also use a mute for that, like this Denis Wick 5525 Stopping Mute. The advantage of a mute is that the plugging of the sound happens more evenly and it also doesn't start to sound out of tune (which is sometimes the case with hand plugging). Your sound becomes very sharp and clear, with pronounced treble, so it's ideal for solo parts.
