Air temperature and humidity combined with the gauge of the strings greatly influence the neck of your bass guitar and it might become arched or concaved, resulting in clattering strings. This is why you occasionally need to loosen or tighten the truss rod. Fender has made a special practical tool for just this purpose; the Fender truss rod wrench. This extra long hex key with T-shaped handle has a diameter of 3/16 inch and can be used on the American Deluxe, American Standard and Highway One bass guitars.

• To make the neck more convex you need to tighten the truss rod (turn clockwise)
• To make the neck less convex you need to loosen the truss rod (counter clockwise)
• only turn it half a turn max and wait a day for the neck to settle
