General

Everyone is familiar with Tascam’s handheld PCM recorders. With the iM2X, you can transform your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into a real audio recorder. With the free-of-charge Tascam app and the iM2X, you can immediately make high-quality double track recordings.

The two XY-oriented condenser microphones always record the preferred sound source, especially because they can be rotated up to 180 degrees. The iM2X can handle high sound levels and has a limiter that prevents unwanted distortion.

Pocket recordings
Old, heavy accumulators are not needed anymore as the iM2X weighs only 30 grams. It is powered by the battery of your mobile phone, so external power sources are redundant. You can charge your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with an optional USB cable. The iM2X is extremely user-friendly: you only have to connect the 30-pin dock connector of your iOS device.

Wrote the following about Tascam iM2X XY stereo microphone for iOS

Dit apparaat heb ik nu al een aantal keer meegenomen naar de oefenruimte. De microfoons kunnen de druk goed aan en met behulp van de limiter worden de opnames erg goed ten opzichte van de standaard iPhone microfoon. Uiteraard blijf je met het probleem zitten dat je de microfoon strategies moet plaatsen om de balans van alle instrumenten goed te krijgen.

De beste opnames heb ik tot nu toe gemaakt met de standaard memo app die meegeleverd wordt met iOS. Het nadeel hiervan is dat het delen van geluidsopnames niet heel makkelijk gaat. Dat kan namelijk alleen per mail of per iMessage. Als je lange opnames hebt dan kun je die trimmen. Als je dat niet wilt zal je eerst de telefoon aan je pc moeten hangen.

Er bestaat een bijbehorende recording app van Tascam. Deze ziet er veelbelovend uit, maar is echt een drama. Op mijn iPhone 4 met iOS 6 en de laatste updates raakte mijn hele telefoon in de war. Als alternatief heb ik vooralsnog de gratis versie van Rode Microphones geïnstalleerd. Deze leek in eerste instantie een stuk beter. De Tascam microfoon werd ook herkend door de app. Met deze app was bij mij het probleem dat de app na zo'n 10 a 15 minuten opnemen crasht.

De microfoon zelf ziet er nogal plastic uit. Dat is het ook. Maar de unit voelt relatief degelijk aan. Wat jammer is, is dat er geen hoesje meegeleverd wordt. Ik zou de microfoon namelijk niet los in mijn tas gooien.

Afgezien van de recording apps ben ik tot nu toe heel tevreden met deze microfoon.
