General

As well as a monitor controller, the Mackie Big Knob Studio is also a high-level USB audio interface. The monitor controller lets you toggle between three different input sources as well as two sets of studio monitors. Switching between the inputs and monitors is a piece of cake, and makes it an ideal tool for listening to your mix over different types of studio monitors. With the audio interface, you can make recordings in 24-bit audio at a sample rate of 96 kHz. The handy cue mix function enables you to record without latency by mixing controlled input sources with other signals. Because you can switch sources so quickly, the Big Knob Studio is perfect for applications like pod casting.

Geweldige interface! Heel fijn dat je alles apart naar je speakers door kan sturen, dit allemaal door alleen maar op een knopje te duwen. Ook kan je de microfoon opnemen op het linker en het rechter kanaal ondanks dat je maar 1 XLR kabel hoeft te gebruiken.

Bij het opnemen worden de inputs (bijv. microfoon) direct op de monitors afgespeeld (direct monitoring staat dus altijd aan). Geen mogelijkheid om dit uit te zetten. Even nagezocht op een aantal fora, het blijkt dat dit alleen maar mogelijk op de Studio+ versie. Dit betekent dus dat als je je monitors vergeet uit te zetten en je gaat opnemen je direct keiharde feedback krijgt. Ik gebruik de audio interface ook voor videobellen, dit kon met mijn vorige interface gewoon over de monitors samen met de aangesloten mic, maar met dit apparaat is dat dus onmogelijk, alleen maar met koptelefoon.
Op de koptelefoon out is het wel mogelijk om de direct monitoring in te stellen, maar daar heeft de potentiometer last van bleed. Ook al heb je de pot volledig op 'cue' staan, je hoort nog steeds lichtelijk je inputs. Jammer, want hij heeft wel veel goede features, maar voor mijn use case is deze interface niet geschikt.

Ik gebruikte de Big Knob al meer dan een jaar voor deze aanschaf en was er altijd al heel tevreden over. Bij het inrichten en opstellen van mn nieuwe studio ruimte vond ik de noodzaak van mijn bureau wat meer te organiseren en vandaar de aanschaf van de Studio. Ik moet nu geen extra mengpaneel meer bij de hand houden voor al mijn inputs, ik kan nu ook mijn hoofdtelefoons kalibreren, ik kan via twee kanalen instrumenten en microfoons aansluiten en ik kan naadloos switchen tussen mijn beide monitor sets. Indien ik later nog meer inputs of outputs nodig heb is er de Studio+ maar voor nu voldoet dit toestel prima en mijn bureau bevat veel minder "rommel" !
