Elektron Model:Cycles Groovebox / Synthesizer

The Elektron Model:Cycles is a desktop groovebox based on FM synthesis. To make sure that anyone can make satisfying use of it, Elektron have toned down the infamous amount of FM sound parameters to make the high-level terminology a little more friendly. The name can be shortened to M:C and is perhaps a playful nod to FM, seeing as we're talking modulators and carriers here. Intended or not, FM is a double-headed monster; with a steep learning curve on one end and, as the FM gurus say, the reward of infinite knowledge on the other. The Model:Cycles strikes a happy medium by not including classic FM parameters but rather opting for a high-level approach. When you're tweaking sounds, you won't be working with FM levels, ratios and scaling but terms like 'colour' for a more accessible attitude towards those that aren't as knowledgeable on the subject of FM synthesis yet.

Features of the Elektron Model:Cycles

Since it's a groovebox, what it does in fact is create step-time loops. There are six tracks that can be assigned with a model of your choice, including kick, snare, metal, perc, tone and chord, each of which has its own specialistic sound parameters. You'll also find two global effects: delay and reverbs with sends per track, as well all the space ever needed to save your sounds and patterns. Rest assured that you can go a long time before having to hook up a backup computer. USB audio is built-in so you can send samples to your smartphone and while lots of drum computers and grooveboxes are based on (virtual) analogue synthesis and/or samples, the FM foundation of the Cycles actually brings a unique sound not many competitors are able to match. That's basically what it boils down to if you're considering adding this sonic machine to your wish list.
