Korg has issued a remarkable set. Combine the MS-20M Kit and the SQ-1 and you're capable of producing a wide range of amazing sounds. The MS-20M Kit is a module edition of the legendary MS-20 synth, ready for you to assemble. The synthesizer does not have its own sequencer, which is why Korg has developed the SQ-1 to accompany it. Together, the MS-210M and the SQ-1 allow you to create exceptional soundscapes and outstanding, creative tones.
Korg MS-20M Kit: synthesis reinvented
The MS-20M Kit is a true descendent of the Korg MS-20, a renowned classic that is responsible for many sounds and soundscapes you can still hear in modern music. Complex tones are no problem for this fully analogue desktop module, and you can use the synth's many controls for effortless real-time editing. Routings can be freely determined, so you're able to create experimental setups. Fortunately, the analogue synthesizer also boasts two modern features that you really wouldn't want to do without: USB and MIDI.
Korg SQ-1
Korg's SQ-1 sequencer offers two 8-step sequencer channels that can be used consecutively, basically providing you with a 16-step sequencer. It's also possible to use them in different modes, like random step playback, for instance. You can even let the two channels control different parameters - they run in parallel - creating complex lines. Alternatively, it's possible to play the SQ-1 like an instrument and operate each step manually. Other interesting features of the Korg sequencer include the Active Step mode, which allows you to skip steps half-way through a sequence, and the Step Jump mode, which enables you to play single steps by pressing them, creating irregular rhythms and loop-like effects.

Dit is nu al dé synth-combinatie van 2015 - zoek niet verder, wacht niet langer...
Ten eerste zijn het 2 toestellen: de eigenlijke synth en een zeer compacte maar krachtige sequencer SQ-1.
Ten tweede heb je in de MS-20M de 2 filter-versies die Korg ooit heeft ingebouwd in de de originele MS-20.
En dit voor de zeker minder dan de helft van wat je betaalt voor een originele MS-20 en SQ-10; en daar heb je dan nul garantie op!
Beide toestellen zijn zeer stevig: metalen behuizing (ook de SQ-1!), stevige potmeters, knoppen voelen degelijk aan, kabelaansluitingen en (voldoende!) meegeleverde kabels.
De SQ-1 is buitengewoon goed geschikt om alle denkbare apparatuur te verbinden. Analoog cv (quasi elk merk: V/Oct en Hz/V), gate, midi, sync en Korg's eigenste LittleBits, ... het maakt niet uit: je kan je apparatuur met elkaar laten samenwerken. Via multiplier-poorten (op de MS-20M of via een andere synth - denk bvb. aan Doepfer) kan je dus ook analoog doorschakelen (uiteraard kan je ook Midi-signalen uitsturen die via 'Thru' verder dan 1 toestel kunenn geraken).
De muzikale mogelijkheden, zowel in studio als live, zijn allemaal direct bereikbaar (1 draaiknop en voor de rest switches voor aan- en uitzetten van bepaalde steps) en laten toch erg gevarieerde sequences toe (16 step rij A/B/A/B... of gewoon na elkaar , 2x8 step synchroon in beide richtingen, random).
De MS-20M dan: hierover kan men boeken volschrijven - dus hier enkel de zeer korte versie.
Het plezier begint met de assemblage: het meegeleverde instructieboek (Eng, Fra, Spa, Dui, Jap - geen Ned) is duidelijk, maar wat aan de minimalistische kant: gelukkig vindt men op youtube etc. al filmpjes van trotse eigenaars die tonen hoe zij de MS-20M in elkaar zetten. Voorzie een grote tafel en reken minstens op 1 uur voor de montage (of 2 uur als je er langer van wil genieten).
En dan de muziek: de originele MS-20 was al instrument dat zeer compexe klanken aankon, de MS-20M is de overtreffende trap: VCO-sync mogelijk, FM-synthese en nog wat extra modulaire aansluitingen: de multipliers, PWM-input en EG2-'normale curve' output. Er is geen klavier... maar Korg heeft wel de TRIG-knop behouden en deze produceert een toon: dus ook zonder de SQ-1 of een andere bron kan je aan klank-synthese doen.
De sound - oscillators, filters, modulatie, met de patchkabels spelen of enkel wat knoppen draaien - omvat het hele spectrum: zeer rauw tot zacht, bruikbaar voor de heftigste leads en bassen tot een filmscore-lijntje, m.a.w. "klinkt als een huis" (mijn mening) en blijft zeer dichtbij (geen hoorbaar verschil) de originele MS-20.
Vooraan links zitten 14 plastic kapjes die voorgeboorde gaten sluiten in de behuizing. Ik vermoed dat Korg hier ooit (hopelijk?) een uitbreiding voorziet of - voor de durvers (NIET mijn verantwoordelijkheid!) - men kan zelf iets extra inbouwen.
Nog een leuk detail: het drukwerk (doos, handleiding, patch-voorbeelden) is net zoals bij de MS-20 en de MS-20-mini 'retro', dus vanaf 't moment dat je de verpakking ziet ben je al in vintage-stemming.
