The Sequential Prophet 6 Dave Smith synthesizer is an unmistakably 21st century instrument in an authentic '70s outfit. The future is now and it's analogue! The control elements are affectionately reminiscent of its muse: the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, which is pretty unique, since a retro push button, nestled between all those LEDs usually found on the face of new synthesizers, is pretty hard to come by. Any self-respecting sound-designer would happily offer up their right arm to have this brand new Prophet 6 as part of their stage or studio set-up.
Sequential Prophet 6: Sonic Potential
In its core, this is a very accessible 6-voice synthesizer, with two oscillators per voice, augmented by a sub-octave oscillator and a white noise oscillator. The classic wave shapes, including sawtooth, square wave, triangle, pulse, and hard-sync ensure the necessary sound variation. Besides a 24 dB low-pass filter, this synth also has a 12 dB high-pass filter and 49 semi-weighted touch-sensitive keys with after touch that feel amazing!
Old Meets New
Even though the Prophet 6 was inspired by its predecessor, the Prophet 5, it can in no way be dismissed as a re-issue or replica. The 'P6' has MIDI and USB-MIDI, as well as backlit pitch and modulation wheels; contemporary features found on most recently released synths. It's sound might be described as a 70s built synth, literally looking deep into the future. It delivers analogue warmth with a subtle bend in pitch, augmented with a rich choice of effects that owners of the P5 could only have dreamt of. Adjust the volume and LPF with the optional expression pedals and start and stop the step sequencer with a further (optional) dedicated footwitch. In short, this synth offers a wealth of possibilities from the past and present that will keep proving their worth well into the future.
The Story of Dave Smith, Sequential, Yamaha and Roland
Way back in the world of synthesizers and under Dave Smith's leadership, Sequential Circuits was busy setting the tone. The Prophet S5 from 1978 was one of the very first polyphonic synthesizers with patch memory. Later, Dave went on to produce contemporary analogue synthesizers under his own name, Dave Smith Instruments, and still does. Recently, Yamaha - who had owned the old Sequential Circuits brand name since 1987 - gave the name back to Dave Smith on the recommendation of Roland's CEO. In a fiercely competitive music industry, you don't see this kind of generosity every day and asa direct result, Sequential Circuits have dropped the 'circuits' and relaunched as 'Sequential'. The Prophet 6 is a warmly welcomed and tangible offering from a deeply respected and experienced company and brings the past right up to the present.

Mon Prophet 6 est un achat (StockB), cest-à-dire retourné neuf une première fois par un autre acheteur. Lemballage a été un peu reconditionné, mais lintérieur fut dans un état nickel et rien n'a manqué, pas même le mode demploi et la notice de démarrage rapide (le tout uniquement en anglais, of course !).
Linstrument est compact et superbe de sobriété et de finition. Les touches du clavier sont « un poil » plus souples que celles du clavier dun Moog sub 37 qui, quant à lui, est parfait. La connectique me semble complète, puisque nous avons port USB, MIDI, Line in/out et entrée pour pédales deffet en 6,35mm ainsi que pour la sortie casque. Juste au-dessus de la connectique une longue charnière piano, détail qui a son importance
Les précautions de mise en route de ce type de synthé sont à rappeler : déballer et laisser le temps (quelques minutes) à la machine de sajuster à la température de son milieu ambiant. Lancer ensuite une procédure auto-tune à la première mise en route. Sil est désaccordé, ce nest pas un défaut puisquil est possible quune des 6 cartes des 6 voix de polyphonie ait légèrement bougé durant le transport. Ce sont des cartes enfichables et la seconde procédure dite de correction de désaccordage est à renouveler uniquement si transports fréquents. D'ailleurs, un grand merci à Synthwalker pour ces conseils avisés sur le forum dAudiofanzine.
Je donne ces précisions de mise en route et de maintenance, car un Prophet 6 reste encore une réalisation artisanale dans sa conception et sa fabrication, donc il le reste forcément aussi dans sa maintenance. A savoir donc
Ensuite, chacun a son approche de la découverte dun nouvel instrument. Me concernant, jétais curieux de tester les potars de réglages du Prophet 6 sur une seule note jouée. Leur organisation semble une ode à lanalo, chercher et découvrir de nouveaux territoires sonores... En tout cas cest mon objectif pour les semaines et les mois (voire les années) à venir. Découverte ensuite des 6 voix indépendantes pour le changement de forme et de modulation de leur VCO respectif. Les deux filtres et les effets répondent merveilleusement. Les sons commencent à se dévoiler avec la douceur et la profondeur caractéristiques de la patte de Dave Smith. Reste ensuite à se laisser embarquer dans la diversité des presets pour se donner une certaine vision de létendue des possibilités de la bête. L'âme faite de fréquences sonores du Prophet 6 commence à peine à se dévoiler.
Pour conclure, je dirai que cest le type de matériel qui génère un grand respect pour ses concepteurs et pour tous les passionnés du P5 comme du P6 (qui en une filiation directe) qui lui ont donné ses lettres de noblesse. Car on est face à un classique, un mythe vintage, certes modernisé et fiabilisé. Le P6 incarne, selon moi, le charme de San Francisco, un art de vivre basé sur la quête du plaisir et dune calme recherche de linstant parfait.
Ces quelques mots de lécrivain Armistead Maupin (Les Chroniques de Sans Francisco 1978) peuvent lillustrer : « Quand ce fut terminé, Mary Ann quitta le bar et traversa Aquatic Park jusquà la baie. Elle resta immobile pendant plusieurs minutes, dans un vent frais, à contempler le phare dAlcatraz. » On croirait entendre flotter lécho dun pad avec effets Poly Mod - Sustain - Reverb dun Prophet 6 !

Een geweldig aanvulling voor mijn (monofone) moog voyager,, en digi synths (kronos, fantom, blofeld, etc)
Bij Bax in Goes heerlijk zeker 3 uur op mijn gemak, mijn shortlist vergeleken en uitgeprobeerd. Hoewel je gewoon een goede koptelefoon aan een medewerker kan vragen (de standaard koptelefoons voldoen echt niet voor dit soort test werk), neem ik altijd mijn eigen Sennheiser Hd650 mee.
Mijn shortlist: prophet 6, rev2, prophet X, Nord wave2 en Roland jupiter X.
Allemaal geweldige apparaten en werkelijk een feest dat al deze apparatuur in de winkel aanwezig zijn, om te kunnen vergelijke/ testen . Van te voren was Ik eigenlijk nogal gecharmeerd van alle schuifjes op de jupiter (in jaren 80 heb ik nog een mooie juno60 gehad), maar ik ben toch gevallen voor het oer analoge en organische geluid van de prophet 6. Ook de interface, de directe besturing van alle functies, spreekt mij enorm aan.
O ja, wel vergeten gelijk een decksaver aan te schaffen, maar niet getreurd: de volgende dag besteld en een dag later in huis

Dave Smith doet het (weer): een modern instrument maken met een eigen karakter en toch de naam "Prophet" trouw blijven.
Klanken: alleen al met de 500 presets (patches 500..999 - niet overschrijfbaar en dus altijd beschikbaar, geen nood aan download- en sysex-procedure) ben je maanden bezig om te beluisteren, te tweaken en improviseren. Vergeet de sequencer en modwheel hier niet: veel klanken komen pas echt tot hun recht dan.
Voor het creatievere werk zijn er er minstens 3 mogelijkheden:
- je kan op de factory-sounds voortbouwen (the easy/lazy way)
- er is een Preset knop: zet 'm uit en de sound wordt enkel gebouwd uit alle knop-instellingen (geen menuscherm, "what you see is what you get")
- er is een "basic patch": een simpele on/off 1 oscillator basisklank.
De 500 user-patches (000..499 - wel overschrijfbaar) zijn voldoende voor jaren sound-design (mocht iemand er meer dan 500 willen/kunnen maken: sysex).
De volledige klank-opbouw is analoog, maar is temperatuur-gecompenseerd: aanzetten en perfecte stabiele tuning.
De ingebouwde effecten zijn uitgebreid en digitaal (maar uitschakelbaar voor analoge puriteinen). Het distortion effect staat daar los van: aparte regelaar én speaker-verscheurend analoog.
De mogelijke P6-klanken en timbres zijn zeer ruim maar waar hij echt schittert is brasses, pads en strings.
Het feit dat-ie 6-stemmig is (eentje meer dan de Prophet-5; of 7 meer indien gepolychained met een 2de P6...) laat de speler toe om voluit te gaan: een verhouding 2/4 of 3/3 bas/akkoord genereert een massieve geluids-muur; denk daarbij aan epische film-muziek, power-intro's, funky brass, dat soort zaken.
Over bouwkwaliteit, design en afwerking kunnen we kort zijn: stevig, zwaar, doordachte plaatsing van knoppen, straalt gewoon degelijkheid uit.
Het toetsenbord, met zowel Aftertouch als Velocity in verschillende niveaus en curves instelbaar, is een plezier om op te spelen: respons en veerkracht ideaal.
En voor de mensen die 4 octaven wat krap vinden (een vaak gehoorde kritiek):
- in 99% volstaat dit echt - mijn ervaring
- MIDI (5-pin en USB) zijn aanwezig, dus je kan de P6 altijd aansturen met een groter toetsenbord; dan koop je misschien beter de module.
Mijn conclusie: het is een duur instrument, maar je krijgt 100% waar voor je geld.
