General

Laney serve up the CUB-SUPER12: a 15-Watt combo valve amp that genuinely sounds like a boutique model. You probably think that sounds like a stretch, so be prepared for a welcome surprise when you plug your guitar into this boostable one-channel guitar amp. Next to a reverb effect that's based on the same algorithm as Laney's Black Country Custom SECRETPATH, this pedal-platform in the form of an amp is home to a custom 12" speaker that can be dialled down to deliver just 1 Watt of power. The preamp section includes three hand-selected 12AX7 valves while the class-AB power amp section harbours a pair of EL84s, and Laney have finished the CUB-SUPER12 with an insert-style FX loop and an external speaker output.

Fijne versterker. Kan van clean via edge of break up naar lekker overstuurd. Verder handzaam en licht en instant goed geluid. Een hele verademing in het digitale tijdperk waar in je meer met settings bezig bent dan met gitaar spelen. Ik gebruik hem thuis met de 1 watt input. Maar kan met de 15 watt input zeker hard genoeg.

Helemaal goed versterkertje. Licht in gewicht maar zwaar in kwaliteit. Een half uurtje van tevoren aanzetten zodat de buizen (EL84 o.a.) warm zijn en dan komt er een crunchy geluid uit, perfect…

Ik zocht naar een handzame versterker die licht genoeg is om iedere week een trap op en af te sjouwen, om vervolgens te vertrekken naar mijn bigband repetitie. Mijn mooie Fender Hot De Lux GB is een beetje te zwaar (25 kg) en qua afmetingen wat onhandelbaar. Mijn nieuwe versterker moest mooi warm klinken, voldoende vermogen hebben om boven de blazers uit te komen en niet zwaarder zijn van een kilo of 10. Ik heb 3 transistorversterkers uitgeprobeerd. Maar als je buizen gewend bent, mis je toch de warme klank. Uiteindelijk kwam ik bij Laney terecht. Een 15 watt buizenversterker (met de klassieke EL 84 eindbuizen). Maar wel met een complete toonregeling (Hoog, midden, laag) en een ingebouwde echo. Toen ik de eerste tonen hoorde wist ik het onmiddellijk. Dit is wat ik zocht. Een mooie warme stevige klank (zelfs met alle toonregelaars op 0). Een uitstekende echo, niet prominent aanwezig, precies goed.
Een boost-functie (die ik niet gebruik) en een mooi laag gewicht en handzame afmetingen. En als extra, een 1 watt ingang om thuis te oefenen. Het volume is ruim voldoende tijdens de repetities van de big band. (standje 6 volstaat). Eigenlijk vind ik het geluid van deze Laney beter dan van mijn Fender, waarvoor ik meer dan twee maal zoveel euri heb neergeteld. Conclusie: voor jazzgitaristen is deze Laney is zijn geld meer dan waard. Jammer dat er geen cover door Laney wordt geleverd.

Na jaren te hebben gespeeld door verschillende merken transistor-versterkers, in het begin versterkers zonder al te veel extras, later ook modelling versterkers, was ik toe aan iets anders. Best goed hoor en leuk spelen die modelling versterkers met al hun keuzes in amp types, cabinets, in lijn te zetten effecten, presets etc. maar het is het geluid is het nét niet. Ik wilde het klassieke geluid: clean en rond bij laag volume en wat meer vervorming bij meer volume of gain, zonder dat het schel of modderig wordt. Dus toch maar eens kijken naar een buizenversterker.
De laatste tijd speel ik vooral thuis, band repetities en optredens worden steeds zeldzamer. Het moest dus een versterker met niet al te veel vermogen worden, zodat de huisgenoten en buren niet al te veel te lijden hebben en bij bescheiden volume de versterker al een beetje "breekt". Na flink wat rond gekeken te hebben op YouTube kwam ik uit bij de Laney Cub Super12. Veel enthousiaste reviews en demo's kwam ik er tegen. Ook niet onbelangrijk: de prijs viel me enorm mee. Bij andere buizenversterkers zit je al snel boven de 1000 euro.
Hij bevalt uitstekend. De tone is mooi, precies wat ik zocht. Met de gain en Boost knop kan ik het geluid zo clean of vervormd maken als ik wil. Ook de ingebouwde digitale reverb is uitstekend.
Ik heb het volume nog niet hoger dan 3 gehad, dus voor de repetitieruimte zit er nog genoeg reserve op. Ik denk dat voor optredens in kleine zaaltjes het volume ook geen enkel probleem is. Een externe speakerkast aansluiten kan, maar is misschien niet eens nodig.
Kortom: ik ben blij met mijn Laney!
