General

The Koch '63 is more than an overdrive pedal. You can use it as a normal effects pedal, but also as a preamp so you can connect the 63'OD directly to an amplifier. Add the fact that the distortion of the 63'OD is wrought by a 12AX7 tube, ensuring warm and organic sounds and you can see that, with Koch, it's top quality all the way. The 63'OD is a stomp box that is modelled after the Koch Pedaltone, but which focuses on milder, bluesier overdrives.

Connecting the 63'OD

As mentioned above, the 63'OD can be connected to the input of a power amp. You can use the same jack output to connect it to a combo or head or to incorporate the pedal into an effects loop. Additionally, the 63'OD features an XLR output with speaker emulation for a convincing sound to send to your mixer. Further still, the pedal has a Remote connector for an external MIDI switcher, for instance.

A practical pedal

You can adjust the timbre and volume of the Koch 63'OD with the six controls on the top. There are two quiet foot switches that allow you to switch between three sounds. You can use the left foot switch to change between the very transparent clean channel and the thick, '60s/'70s-style blues/rock tube sounds of the overdrive. The right switch should give the overdrive a proper gain boost. Practical extras include two effects loops - a pre version to connect effects like compressor or overdrive, and a post version for delays and reverbs, for instance. Another practical feature is the 9-volt output, via which you can power a series of other pedals.

Wrote the following about Koch 63'OD overdrive and preamp

Als gitarist ben ik altijd op zoek naar verbetering van mijn gitaarklank. In de 63'OD van het Nederlandse merk Koch vond ik zeker wel iets.

Ten eerste geeft deze preamp een dynamiek, bij het aanslaan van de snaren, die ik met digitale oplossingen nooit heb gehad. Ik denk dat het komt doordat er een echte radiobuis in de 63'OD zit.

Ten tweede is het een warme klank, die bijvoorbeeld de gitaarmodellen uit de Boss SY1000 van mij, mooier maakt.

Tot slot is de overdrive ook warm van klank. Ik gebruik ook wel versterker modellen uit de Boss GT1000 en die worden beter in combinatie met de Koch 63'OD.

Ik vind ook de knoppen op het bedieningspaneel goed nauwkeurig werken. Kortom: ik ben blij met deze voorversterker en de milde overdrive die er in zit.

Wrote the following about Koch 63'OD overdrive and preamp

Beste mensen, de Koch 63'OD is echt een gat in de markt.
We zijn met onze band onlangs overgestapt op in-ear.
De Koch pre-amps zijn dan de perfecte oplossing.

Ik vind de sound echt goed, zowel clean als overdrive.
Mooi, warm. En ik houd van de bluesy overdrive. De Superlead was mij te 'metal'.

Ik gebruik de 63'OD als vervanger van mijn Fender Blues Deluxe amp.
Want dankzij de XLR-output met speaker cabinet simulatie, kan ik mijn amp tegenwoordig thuis laten.
Sterker nog, ik heb 'm op Marktplaats gezet.
En dan vind ik een hele prestatie voor zo'n klein kastje.

I.c.m. de Boost functie vind ik dit een heel multi-functioneel apparaat.

Wat minder te spreken ben ik over de bijgeleverde adapter, komt op mij een beetje kwetsbaar over. Ook het daisy chainen via de PSU vond ik geen succes, ik had bestwel last van brom (achteraf bleek dat waarschijnlijk veroorzaakt door m'n wah wah).
Gelukkig had ik nog een paar spaarcenten over en daarvoor heb ik er een Cioks AC Rider voeding bijgekocht. En die is oerdegelijk, muisstil en stevig vastgeschroefd op m'n effectenplank.

Daarnaast vind ik het jammer dat de Boost niet werkt op het cleane kanaal, maar dat was blijkbaar technisch niet mogelijk.

Het enige dat ik nu nog mis is een Reverb. Maar vooralsnog draait de geluidsman telkens wat bij & wellicht dat ik daar nog een pedaaltje voor aanschaf t.z.t.
