General

A tad bigger and more versatile than a standard mandolin, the Gold Tone Mandocello features a single-cut body complete with two f-style soundholes — a subtle nod at the cello which helped inspire this mandolin-based baritone instrument.

Built-In Electronics

To prepare it for the stage, Gold Tone have equipped the Mandocello with a magnetic pickup at the neck and a transducer at the bridge, both of which come with a dedicated volume control so you can tweak the balance as needed. So you can keep the instrument in one piece on the way to the venue, it comes complete with a matching hard case.

Wrote the following about Gold Tone Mandocello with Hard Case

3/5: mooi en leuk instrument, maar afstelling laat te wensen over.

Verrassend leuk instrument als je eens iets anders wilt dan een gitaar, baritongitaar of bas, maar een mandoline weer net te klein vindt. De mandocello is precies gestemd als een cello, dus je kan er veel kanten mee op. Akkoorden, bluegrass fiddle tunes of Bach - kan allemaal. Mandocello’s zijn moeilijk te vinden, die van Gold Tone is eigenlijk de enige die je enigszins betaalbaar kan vinden (en dan nog is het ruim 1000 euro).

Als bassist/gitarist is het even wennen aan de stemming in kwinten, maar het instrument speelt licht en met een uurtje oefenen heb je de basisakkoorden al snel onder de knie en kun je eenvoudige nummers al snel meespelen. Het instrument beloont je snel - het klinkt al snel ‘muzikaal’.

Akoestisch een goede klank en zeker luid genoeg voor ‘woonkamergebruik’, ook als je samenspeelt met anderen. Versterkt klinkt de humbucker vol en warm en heeft veel laag. Het piëzo-element valt tegen. Zeker solo erg schel, wil je een bruikbare klank dan moet je er echt wat humbucker bijdraaien.

Wat ook flink tegenvalt is de afstelling. Uit de koffer bleek de intonatie niet goed en was er de nodige fretbuzz. Voor een instrument van bijna 1100 euro verwacht je toch eigenlijk wel dat iemand bij Bax even de koffer opent om dit soort dingen te checken zodat je als klant niet direct je luthier hoeft te bellen of zelf aan de slag moet met afstellen. Dat is natuurlijk niet heel moeilijk, maar toch. Bij het verplaatsen van de brug knapten pardoes de twee a-snaren, dus er direct een setje snaren bij bestellen is geen overbodige luxe.

Al met al, ja, leuk instrument en zeker de moeite waard, maar voor dit geld had er echt wel even voor aflevering naar de afstelling gekeken mogen worden.
