Ik wilde graag een Audio Interface aanschaffen waarmee ik zonder extra randapparatuur vocalen zou kunnen opnemen. Dus alleen een microfoon, een computer met DAW software en de interface.
Al jaren had ik een Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 van de eerste generatie. Daarvan is een bekende kwaal dat de fantoomvoeding soms hapert. Dus had ik een mixer of channel strip nodig. Daarnaast gebruikte ik ook nog zo'n klein Behringer mixertje om in ieder geval twee afzonderlijk regelbare hoofdtelefoons te kunnen gebruiken: Eén voor de vocalist en één voor mijzelf.
De SSL 2+ MK II paste in dat plaatje. Aangeschaft als B-stock alhier. Nu één sessie gebruikt. De 2+ MK II installeert vrijwel probleemloos (al sloeg mijn virusscanner aan op de meest recente on-line installer, maar dat ligt aan de virusscanner. Een oudere versie deed het wel.) en doet zonder problemen zijn werk op een Windows 11 laptop met Cubase als DAW. Inregelen van de opnamesterkte is prettiger dan met de Scarlett, omdat de 2+ MK II echte 5-segments meters heeft. Het bovenste ledje is rood en geeft aan dat je te hard instuurt. De Scarlett deed dit met een ringetje rond de ingangspotmeter dat groen en rood kleurde. Dat is in de eerste plaats minder nauwkeurig en als je, zoals ik, rood-groen kleurenblind bent, heb je er niks aan.

Het enige nadeel van dit apparaat is dat als je de hoofdtelefoon uitgang echt hard zet, deze op een eerder punt hoorbaar begint te vervormen dan dat de opname overstuurd raakt. Voor normaal gebruik is dit echter geen groot probleem, maar het is wel de reden dat ik geen vijf maar vier sterren heb gegeven (en ik mij nu een echte recensent voel in plaats van een eenvoudige hobbyproducer :-).
