Flashback to the autumn of 2019. Out of nowhere, ASM drop the Hydrasynth: a more than welcome, completely fresh synthesizer that actually offered experienced sound designers a more satisfying number of nuance-tweaking options and parameters than comparable units. But, since too much is never enough, ASM set free the Hydrasynth Deluxe.

Features of the ASM Hydrasynth Deluxe

In essence, this Deluxe model is a double Hydrasynth in one box. The polyphony has doubled from 8 to 16 voices, the premium keyboard comes with 73 notes and offers polyphonic aftertouch, and the dual-engine with key-split and dual-voice functions features individual stereo outputs. Fully based on digital tech, the sound engine is capable of more than you'd expect of a standard virtual analogue synth and serves up traditional sets of oscillators, LFOs, envelopes and filters, all of which seriously add up. In terms of performance, potential and cool points, this is one of the best affordable synths out there right now.

Wrote the following about ASM Hydrasynth Deluxe Synthesizer

Really pleased I went for the Deluxe over the standard version or Explorer. Well worth the cost. Love the multi mode with split keyboard. I didn't think I cared about full size keys, given I don't play piano and primarily a guitarist. But now when I play my synth with mini-keys I struggle! The aftertouch is amazing, one of the features that makes it such an expressive synth. I've had another synth for 10years and still don't fully understand the menus and how I arrived at certain sounds. I've only had the Deluxe a few weeks and while I've only explored a fraction of its capabilities I also haven't looked at the manual once yet! I find it so intuitive and so enjoyable to play. So easy to create super characterful and beautiful sounds. I don't find it too digital or harsh, it sounds big and warm through my monitors and the stereo is so immersive wearing headphones. One function not mentioned in the specs is that it's also time machine. I sit down to play for 10mins and I'm suddenly catapulted 2hrs into the future. I still need to work out how to travel backwards in time... :-)

There is such a lot of hype about this synth, with numerous well respected youtube reviewers rating it so highly.
Sadly I don't agree.
First and for most, the main audio outputs exhibit high levels of digital noise.
Then the general sound of the synth is digital harshness.
I certainly find myself reaching for the filter knob with most of the presets to turn down the harshness.
The ribbon is a gimmick and does not get outputted to a DAW properly so is only a live performance tool locally to the synth in theremin mode.
The arpeggiator is so boring and uninspiring, even across 2 parts - really limited.
The key bed feels pretty rubbish and cheap. The aftertouch is harsh, like on or off. I tried to modify this in the general settings but nothing felt right.
Overall I would say look elsewhere. This synth is an attempt to make a cheap digital synth engine into a mammoth sound design tool but it fails at the first hurdle.

Ik heb de Hydrasynth Deluxe nu een week of 3 in mijn bezit en ben blij met mijn keuze.
Ik zat te twijfelen tussen de Novation Summit en de Hydrasynth Deluxe Beide synths zijn geweldig, maar de Hydrasynth vind ik persoonlijk wat veelzijdiger klinken. De Summit wordt vaak gezien als de meer analoog klinkende van de twee, maar dat vind ik niet het geval. De Hydrasynth is m.i. uitgebreider en kan net zo analoog klinken als je zelf wilt. Een aantal andere dingen gaven de doorslag. De prijs is zo'n 400 lager dan de Summit, de Poly AT is geweldig en het grotere klavier is voor mij belangrijk. Hoewel de Hydrasynth Deluxe minder knoppen heeft dan de Summit is de layout van de Hydrasynth zeer goed doordacht. De functie van de knoppen verandert aan de hand van de sectie waar je in zit en dat werkt perfect met kleuren en teksten op het schermpje onder de knoppen. Een hele slimme en vlot werkende interface. Ik raad de Hydrasynth echt iedereen aan.
Verder is ie stevig gebouwd en voelen de knoppen robuust en van hoge kwaliteit. Voor mij een synth waar ik weer jaren mee vooruit kan.

Wat een instrument. Met een industriële look en gebouwd als een tank.
Alles is van hoge kwaliteit.
En met een Polyphonic Aftertouch toetsenbord en een ribbon maakt het een zeer expressieve synthesizer.

Wat een droomapparaat. Ik was op zoek naar een polyfonische synth om mee te nemen naar jams. Hier heb ik de perfecte kandidaat gevonden. Het zijn eigenlijk twee synths in één. Het is super gemakkelijk om twee stemmen in te stellen en bijvoorbeeld zowel een pad als een lead te spelen.

De synth kan digitaal klinken (wat ik soms erg fijn vind), maar met het toevoegen van wat AnalogFeel en Phase Randomisation kan je het ook overtuigend laten klinken als een analoog apparaat. Voor een extra laag kan je ook nog een LFO de tuning van de oscillators laten beïnvloeden.

Het enige nadeel is dat ik erg veel moeite had met het vinden van een juiste (en betaalbare) tas om hem in te vervoeren. Ik heb hier uiteindelijk meer geld aan uitgegeven dan ik had gehoopt. Maar mijn jamavonden zijn een stuk aangenamer met deze synth!
