Yamaha's CP73 stage piano may have the same sounds, effects and possibilities as the larger CP88 but its keyboard is dramtically different. Yamaha has developed a new Balanced Action keyboard especially for the CP73 and as such, its 73 keys play like an electric piano. Unusually, its notes also begin and end on E, making it ideal for playing along with instruments like guitar and bass. The CP73 has a robust aluminium housing and weighs just 13.1 kg.

High-quality sounds

There 57 sounds onboard, divided into 3 sections. Each section has its own controls, allowing you to scroll quickly through all of the available instruments. Yamaha has already announced that expansion packs will be made available. Yamaha CP73 Stage Piano

Ik heb al jaren een Nord Electro 5D. Fijne klanken en prima orgelsectie, zeker met de “echte” drawbars. Sinds enige tijd heb ik ook een Hammond XK1 (niet te verwarren met de nieuwere XK1-c) en die geeft toch een ‘echter’, gruiziger Hammond sound die ik zoek. Dus de Nord was er vooral voor de piano’s. Maar dat waterfall keyboard speelt niet echt fijn voor piano. Dus: upgraden naar Electro 6HP? Duur en een orgelsectie zonder fysieke drawbars, die ik ook niet meer echt nodig had. Het werd dus de CP73, €700 goedkoper dan de Nord. Geen CP88 want ik speel vooral e. Piano en het moet ook mee te nemen zijn.
Toetsenbord: prima voor e.piano’s en goed te doen voor ak. Piano’s. Je krijgt voldoende feedback van de toeters en om expressief te kunnen spelen. Ietsje minder zwaar dan de graded hammer action, meer lijkend op de actie van een Rhodes en dat is prima.
Klanken: de bekende ak. Piano set die je ook in de grote clavinova’s voor in de huiskamer ziet. Helder, gedetailleerd en ruim voldoende dynamiek. Wel is de decay van de grote vleugels (CFX, Bösendorfer) aan de korte kant. In een band setting is dat alleen maar fijn, in een solo zetting bij langzame ballads merk je het wel. De e.piano’s zijn uitstekend met veel mogelijkheden en dynamiek. De sub sectie is van alles wat. Best leuke pads en strings, maar de orgels zijn het helemaal niet. Ik mis belangrijke registraties (8880 0000, 8888 000, 8000 0777) en de C2/C3 chorus setting van de echte Hammonds. Het rotary effect is mwaaah, dat van de Nord is veel beter. Maar vooral is de sound veel te clean. En je kunt rotary niet combineren met distortion, dus dat schiet niet op. Voor mij met m’n XK1 niet zo’n punt, maar dit instrument is dus niet zo all round als de Nord.
De interface met de vele knoppen is heel erg fijn en ook erg goed dat elke sectie specifieke effect mogelijkheden heeft naast de globale delay en reverb, die wel per sectie in te stellen zijn. Beetje afgekeken van Nord, maar op punten wel beter. Al met al goede prijs / kwaliteit. Goede brouwkwaliteit ook.
