The old Hammond B3 organ has legendary status in the jazz, gospel and prog-rock scene - a reputation as forceful as its mammoth-grade weight, which made carting one of these things from gig to gig a hassle best avoided. These days, the sound of a B3 has become a lot more portable, not because Hammond have stopped making big and beautiful organs, but because they also offer up far more compact and band-friendly digital organs that still boast impressive, B3-style sound - like the Hammond M-Solo.

The Hammond M-Solo

In terms of size, this model is a slip of a thing compared to the B3, already making it a 100% stage-ready touring tool. The 49-note keyboard slims things down a bit further, but under the hood lies a whole world of options. The bank of drawbars works alongside six different sound groups, starting with four organ groups based on the sound of four vintage models: the B3, the Vox, the Farfisa and the Acetone, the registers of which are controlled via the drawbars - just like a real organ. The next group is a string machine with a choir which, rather than mimicking the sound of a big cinematic orchestra, gives you the classic sound of the string/vocoder machines of yesteryear, where your drawbars adjust the attack and release and determine whether the choir is made up of male or female voices. Het is natuurlijk mooi om altijd veel sterren te geven maar deze Hammond heeft maar heel kort met mij te maken gehad. Ik was er gelijk klaar mee. Jawel, prachtig geluid, jawel, prima aanbieding destijds bij Bax en jawel, er staat echt lekker groot Hammond op. Maar verder. Heb bij binnenkomst eerst even een software upgrade gedaan en dat vond ik niet eenvoudig t.o.v. de Nords die ik heb staan. Neerzetten op de standaard was natuurlijk een fluitje van een cent want dat ding is vederlicht. En daar ging de eerste ster. Dit ding is te licht. Als je lekker wilt spelen dan moet je met één hand de Hammond vasthouden anders floept 'tie zo naar de grond. De toetsen hadden ook scherpe randjes, iets wat je toch niet verwacht van een board in deze prijsklasse. Tot slot vond ik de extra's synth & strings een tegenvallende optie. Omdat er weinig geheugenplaatsen zijn kun je ook weinig zelfgemaakte settings kwijt en om live even je favo synth of stringgeluidje bij elkaar te schuiven moet je wel beschikken over een fotografisch geheugen. Daarom maar drie sterren. Positief is dat Bax het geld snel had teruggestort, het werd daarna toch weer een Nord.

Geweldig instrument! Toen ik hem ‘droog’ op mijn PA aansloot viel het in eerste instantie wat tegen, maar ‘s avonds repeteren met de soulband en de Hammond kwam tot leven! Fantastisch! Kwam er makkelijk tussendoor, mooie leslie, makkelijk distortion toe te voegen waardoor het van jazz /soul instrument ook een rock vriendje wordt. Alles makkelijk hands-on what you see is what you get & hear, geen schermpjes waar je diep in moet duiken. Drie geheugenplaatsen die ik nog even moet vullen met sounds. En het weegt helemaal niets… dus wel oppassen als je over de toetsen wilt scheuren met je handpalm, kans bestaat dat de hele Hammond dan van de standaard af valt. Razensnelle levering door Bax: ‘s avonds besteld, volgende dag in huis. Wat een feest… 1 minpuntje: de pitch bend voor de synth sectie is een hele toon en kan niet op een halve toon worden ingesteld. Gemiste kans. Verder een prima goed inzetbaar instrument voor een zeer redelijke prijs.
