Sela Varios Snare Cajon

An ever increasing number of people are discovering just how versatile an instrument the cajon is. And thanks to its many available accessories, it's only becoming more and more versatile as time goes by. With the Varios Snare Cajon, the well-known percussion company Sela released a cajon that combines high-grade features with a friendly price-tag. It's a great instrument for beginners who don't want to compromise quality for price. It's perfect for various styles of latin music, highly popular amongst flamenco musicians, and thanks to its portable nature, it's also a hit amongst street performers.

Sela Varios: features

On the technical side, everything is well in order: the body is made of 11-ply maple and it features a front plate with a poplar veneer finish. Striking the frontplate will result in the familiar snare sizzle, and striking the back of the instrument gives a more traditional snare-less cajon sound. There's something special about those snare wires too - they can be removed, but you can also add an additional set. To do so, you'll need a Sela Snare System: a separately available snare wire module you can mount yourself. In other words, thanks to the snare modules and the two playable sides, this instrument allows you to completely customise your sound.

History of the cajon

Once upon a time, the cajon was nothing more than a crate that held food. That doesn't sound all too interesting in and of itself, but the history of this instrument is related to a black page in our collective histories. When African slaves were transported to the New World, the cajons' predecessors held their food supplies. Once the crates were empty, the slaves would start using them to create rhythms, which in turn lead to the birth of the cajon. Eventually, the instrument reached Peru, where it was shaped into what it is today.
