Many studies have shown that playing a musical instrument is a great benefit to children. Not only does it allow for musical development, it also improves hand-eye coordination. Which instrument children like will vary, of course, from a small violin to piano, from guitar to flute. Pearl has made something fun for the budding percussionist: the Pearl PFB300 Fun Box children's cajon. If you look at the picture, you'll see that its bright yellow colour really pops off the screen and the red and black decorations give this instrument a bit of cultural authenticity.

Both the body and the striking plate of this cajon have been made of fibreglass. Behind the striking plate, snares make that 'sizzle' that cajons are known for, that emulates the sound of a hi-hat when you play ghost notes. You're supposed to sit on the cajon and play on the striking head between your legs. The seat size (25.4 x 24 cm) is specifically suited for young percussionists.

What is a cajon?

A small introduction for those who have never seen or heard a cajon. It is basically a box with snares behind the striking plate that vibrate when you hit it. Because the striking plate will vibrate more and deeper the further you get away from the edge (where it is attached to the rest of the body) it will provide a different sound depending on where on the plate you hit it. In its own way, a cajon is an alternative to a complete drum set. The cajon gives you a deep bass drum sound, a snare drum sound and you can emulate a hi-hat by lightly tapping the edges. What makes cajons so much fun, is that there are many separately available accessories that you can use to expand your sound palette.
