The GigMaster is more versatile, and the RockMaster is more geared toward classic rock sounds, so it stands to reason that the MetalMaster is designed for... do we really even have to say it? That said, the ENGL E304 MetalMaster 20 Combo does have a lot in common with the other amps in the family, and just like the others, it's a compact 1x10-inch combo with two switchable channels. This guitar amp is, however, voiced to be able to produce an aggressive metal sound, so it has a lot more bite than the RockMaster and can produce a lot more gain. The E304 MetalMaster 20 Combo is driven by two ECC83 tubes and two EL84 power tubes, so it can produce up to 20 watts of authentic ENGL sounds.

ENGL E304 MetalMaster 20 Combo: scooped sound

The chicken-head knobs featured on the matte black control panel make it easy to get the perfect metal sound in no time. The clean and lead channels share a 3-band EQ, and they each have their own gain control. The clean gain controls the volume and produces some nice distortion when you crank it up. The lead gain, on the other hand, puts you in high-gain territory where you can get anything from fat distortion to screaming leads. There's even a mid-scoop function for a real metal sound. Finally, a master volume knob so you can adjust the overall sound without affecting the volume balance between the channels.

Integrated Power Soak and versatile connectors

You'll find the built-in Power Soak function on the back of the ENGL E304 MetalMaster 20 Combo. This allows you to lower the power from 20 W to 5 W or even 1W, so you get the same tube overdrive and dynamics at lower volumes. You can also switch off the speaker during recording by using the speaker simulation via the line output. An FX loop makes it easy to connect your favourite effects pedals and/or processors, and you can get even more sounds by adding optional 1x 8, 1x 16 of 2x 8-ohm speaker cabinets. Finally, if you add the two optional foot switches or the ENGL Z-4 to the mix, you can control the channels, the digital reverb, mid-scoop and FX loop from a distance while you play.
