For fans of more brutal flavours of vintage distortion, Death By Audio serve up a smasher. The Germanium Filter is made possible by two matched, sixties Russian Germanium transistors that they don't even make any more, so you can jack in and scroll through everything from the classic to the absolutely bonkers. While the controls have been kept ridiculously basic, they're hyper-detailed and intuitive so that, with nothing more than one footswitch and two pots, you can smear your output in some thick and fully customised dirt.
The Death By Audio Germanium Filter: From Freaky Fuzz to Dirty Distortions to Subtle Drive
Via the Heavy-to-High filter pot, the tone can be warped from sharp and cutting to thick and 'subby' with near-effortless ease and, in between both extremes, there's a while landscape of textures to be explored. The Clean-to-Dirty gain pot is self explanatory, and when you start playing around with the control pots of your guitar, this pedal can basically be taken in every fuzz and distortion based direction - from the sweet and subtle to the all-out distorted and even to the freakier side of fuzz. As a neat bonus, both control pots are chunky enough to be tweaked with your toe, leaving your hands free to do what they do best.
