General
Inspired by the Klon Centaur, EHX developed the affordable Soul Food. The Electro Harmonix Soul Food is a rewarding overdrive pedal that lifts your guitar sound above the mix in a remarkably transparent way. Add a rough edge, go for total distortion or simply choose a clean boost (by turning the Drive knob all the way down) to overdrive a tube amplifier for instance. The Soul Food offers a highly defined sound and excellent headroom, and responds beautifully to the force of your playing.
Experimenting with the Soul Food
The Drive knob, which adds a pleasant dose of mids to your sound, offers a range of tones. The Treble knob of the pedal allows you to experiment, either boosting or toning down the high frequencies. If you like, you can use an internal switch to set the Soul Food to a high-quality Buffered Bypass, which compensates for possible signal loss, for instance if you're using long cables. The Electro Harmonix stomp box can be powered by a 9-volt battery or using the included power adapter.

Bought this pedal to use as a clean boost and to gain-stack with my other overdrive/distortion pedals. Still getting to grips with it in order to get the best out of it, but works well with my variety of single-coil and humbucker equipped guitars. Needs careful setting to use as a true overdrive pedal as the mids radically increase as the Drive is increased.
Great pedal though, should have bought it 6 months ago when they were £40-45 :-)

I have no idea how it compares to an original Klon (not many of us can afford one), but I am definitely happy with the sound I am getting out of this pedal. You can go from clean boost to pretty distorted, and the pedal always cleans up nicely when rolling back the volume on the guitar.

Voor de prijs een ontzetten goede overdrive. Als overdrive en boost te gebruiken. Door mij vooral als light en medium overdive gebruikt. Combineert goed met andere pedalen. Een hele mooie en betaalbare combi is bijvoorveeld met de Boss Blues Driver. Door de prijs een mooi pedaal om te proberen. Ook fijn dat deze met adapter wordt geleverd. Daar ga je geen spijt van krijgen.

Ik heb de EHX Soul Food vergeleken met de EKX Crayon en de TC Electronic MojoMojo.
De goed en makkelijk instelbare MojoMojo heb ik als snel aan de kant gelegd vanwege het wat wollige ondefineerbare geluid.
De beide EHX overdrives geven een helder goed geluid waarbij de Soul Food wat meer boost heeft en de Crayon wat meer Drive. Ook versterkt de Soul Food het middentonengebied net iets meer dan de Crayon. Het geluid van de Soul Food is wat ronder dan dat van de Crayon. Ik merkte bij het vergelijken dat ik telkens met de Crayon probeerde om het geluid van de Soul Food te creëren en dat lukt behoorlijk goed. Ze zitten echt heel dicht bij elkaar.
UIteindelijk heb ik voor de Soul Food gekozen om de volgende redenen:
1. erg gemakkelijk in te stellen
2. moor helder transparant, rond geluid
3. er zit een adapter bij.
4. de drive is precies genoeg voor mij (andere overdrives hebben vaak veel meer drive)

Echt wat ik zocht. Ik speel vooral Indie Rock van rond de 2000 en het is hier echt perfect voor. De volumeknop is erg handig om stiller te kunnen spelen en zou het geweldig vinden mocht het op elke pedaal staan. Gaat ook goed samen met nog een Distortion pedaal (Ik heb een BOSS DS1). Echt een aanrader qua Overdrive pedalen.

Super overdrive, heerlijk transparant geluid en prik nu met mijn sound lekker door de mix heen. Maakte gebruik van een Blackstar Overdrive, die een wollig geluid opleverde. De combinatie met de Soul Food heeft me aangenaam verrast. Super en dat voor dit geld!
