AKG Drum Set Session Microphones

General

Drum kits can be difficult to amplify - not just because there are multiple drums involved, but also because of the dynamics. Ordinary microphones are usually not up to the task, which is why AKG have developed a special set of drum microphones: the Drum Set Session. This set consists of seven mics that are all designed for a specific part of the drum kit to ensure high-quality, amplified sound.

The AKG Drum Set Session: Overview

Drum mics need to feature a fast transient response, otherwise a part of the attack is always shaved off the end signal. These AKG mics have an excellent response to fast attack and includes a P2 microphone for the kick, four P4 microphones to take care of the toms and snare (and come with a rim clip) and two P17 overheads (also with a clip) that are technically identical to the P-170.

Applications

Of course, the microphones are primarily designed to mic up kits, but the P2 can also be used for other instruments like single floor toms, bass amps or low-frequency brass instruments. The P4 can be used for percussion, brass instruments and guitar amps while the P17 is the most versatile of the lot since this stereo pair of condensers can take on entire orchestras and choirs, as well as acoustic guitars and pianos. The whole set comes in a solid case with moulded foam interior.
