Bass guitarist Sean Hurley has made his mark on the music scene in Los Angeles. He is most well known as the bassist in John Mayer's band but this all-rounder is also still doing lots of session work. His bass can be heard on music from acts as diverse as Ringo Starr, Annie Lennox, Robin Thicke, Alanis Morrissette and Vertical Horizon. His trusty Fender 1961 Precision Bass is never far from his side, so Fender decided it was time to give him his own Custom Shop Artist Signature model.

Artist Signature 1961 Precision Bass: Authentic Sound

The Sean Hurley bass sounds just like a Precision Bass should. The solid body is made of alder and finished with a Nitrocellulose lacquer while the quartersawn maple neck has a rosewood fretboard with a 7.25-inch radius and a wide top nut measuring 1.75 inches. The only pickup is a vintage split-coil, hand-woven to get the output exactly right. This gives the bass a nice punch with a deep warm tone and a strong mid-range. Thanks to the tone control, this bass is surprisingly versatile.

Unique Design Element: String Mute

When the Fender craftsmen were studying Hurley's well-used bass they discovered a piece of foam he'd added. As a session musician who is often in the studio, he'd stuffed this under the strings in front of the bridge to deaden them. Fender picked up on this clever idea and designed a bridge with a string mute that can be turned on at any time. This feature has never been available on a Fender bass guitar before.
