General
Apogee have raised the bar with the release of the Element 46 Thunderbolt audio interface. It gives you access to 4 analogue inputs and 6 analogue outputs. The Element 46 contains all of the best elements from the Symphony, Ensemble and Groove, but this time with a minimalistic look. This no-frills interface is equipped with 4 good combo inputs (XLR/TRS on the front and 2 headphone jacks. On the back you'll find 2 analogue inputs alongside 2 Toslink connectors and an input/output for the built-in word clock.
More than meets the eye
The Apogee Element 46 may look simplistic on the outside, but there's real power on the inside. As such, you'll find 4 first-rate preamps that provide no less than 75 dB of gain, made possible by the famous Advanced Stepped Gain Architecture. The fully analogue circuit was designed to optimise the gain stage to produce minimal distortion and superior bandwidth. High-quality analogue-to-digital converters make it possible to produce an incredibly detailed yet natural-sounding mix. The same goes for the D/A conversion.
The importance of good clocking
The importance of good synchronisation between digital devices is often underestimated. Having a fantastic word clock is vital. Unfortunately, too many studios spend way too much on these devices. Luckily in the case of the Element 46 you get an outstanding built-in clock source that accurately synchronises both internal digital processes and external devices. The result is a clean AD/DA conversion, which then in turn results in exceptionally accurate audio reproduction. Finally, all processes related to the inputs and outputs can be controlled by the Element Control App. You can download the app for iOS devices via the AppStore.

Apogee, primarily known for their high-end interfaces for Apple computers, have raised the bar with the release of the Symphony, Ensemble thunderbolt and Groove interfaces. With the release of the respective Element 24, 46 en 88, Apogee offers us a trifecta of Thunderbolt audio interfaces that are more than meets the eye. The Element series is a powerful one, and is not a trio to be trifled with.
