General

In the big-name world (well, 'tis still boys with their toys, of course), all those analogue cables are kind of done by now. Digital formats for the big time are the order of the day, and that's just as well; who's going to plug 192 traditional jack/XLR cables all the time? After all, those are the quantities we're talking about with this Solid State Logic UMD192 audio interface. The name stands for USB Madi Dante, and those are the formats in which this module plays a central role. No analogue connections, no connectors for your headphones or guitar, that's not what the UMD192 is for.

The role of the Solid State Logic UMD192

This is a middle man amid high-end systems in the world of live, broadcasting and (very large) studios. The 192 did not come out of the blue, it is about the number of channels this module can handle up to 96 kHz, or - in fact vice versa - 128 channels at 192 kHz. It converts one to the other, and you don't even always need a computer to do that. It can, in which case your channels go to the computer via USB-C. But you can also directly convert a MADI system to Dante, or vice versa. So it is a kind of bridge between two major digital systems. And yes: it's not a take-home at the supermarket checkout, and by no means everyone needs it. But in the little world where you use the UMD192, it is probably one of the more advantageous products in the bunch.
