General

According to Yamaha, the PSS-F30 has everything needed to teach children how to play keyboard. Admittedly, it's quite the complete keyboard, since it's been packed with 120 instruments, 114 backing tracks in different styles and 30 well-known songs. The intuitive button lay-out lets you effortlessly access the different sounds, set the metronome or adjust the volume, while the built-in speaker or a pair of headphones can be plugged in to listen to your playing. Since this Yamaha keyboard runs on just 4 batteries (not included), it can literally be played anywhere, or alternatively powered via USB (cable not included).

The Yamaha PSS-F30 Mini-Keyboard

The PSS-F30 is a so-called 'mini-keyboard' which, in this case, means it's been equipped with 37 keys that cover 3 full octaves to accommodate most beginner songs. The keys are also a little smaller than usual, so that children are able to comfortably play chords. Yamaha offers a free, downloadable songbook with this mini-keyboard that teaches eager students how to play each one of the pre-programmed songs.

Out of the cheap keyboards, I prefer Yamaha's sounds to Casio's for my requirements (although the Casio piano itself is fine). I'm a guitarist and only need a keyboard for recording a bit of piano, organ, strings, brass etc on backing tracks, and the tones on offer here are excellent for that purpose. Organ tones aren't in the Hammond B3 ballpark of course, but they're more than acceptable. And of course you can always stick them through a Leslie simulator. It even has some pretty fair bass sounds. You're not going to be recording professionally or gigging with this as a solo instrument, but for layering a few backing tracks... and all for 55 quid? Brilliant! I can't comment on the inbuilt tunes etc, as I only use it as stated. It has good life on rechargeable batteries and is very small and portable. The only slight negative (which I knew before I bought) is the 1/8" output jack. Fair enough, I haven't had a problem with it, but 1/4" is more robust for a line out to a recording deck or similar. Generally though, if you have limited space in your 'studio' (ha-ha!) and your requirements are small, this is the one to get.

Mijn grote bezwaar is dat op ALLE geluiden een ingebouwd galm effect (reverb) zit. Dit kan niet uitgezet worden. Als ze bij Yamaha nou gewoon één knopje hadden toegevoegd met Reverb on/off dan was dit voor mij een veel leuker ding geweest.

Mooi ding. Licht en gemakkelijk. Gebruiksaanwijzing onnodig. Werkt op batterijen, 4x AA, of op een powerbank met usb kabeltje. Veel geluiden, ritmes en voorbeeldsongs. Voor dit geld een zeer goede koop.

Ik heb dit keyboard voor mijn zoontje gekocht die is er sowieso erg blij mee. Precies klein genoeg om op schoot te kunnen gebruiken en overal neer te kunnen zetten. De geluiden die er in zitten zijn fijn, ook prima om als wat meer gevorderde te gebruiken, of om even snel een ideetje op uit te proberen. Je kunt het keyboard splitsen zodat je met een aanslag aan de linker kant de toonsoort van de begeleiding kan veranderen en met je rechterhand meldodien kan spelen. Verder zitten er nog veel opties in die ik nog moet ontdekken, maar papa mag niet teveel aan het keyboard komen. Dat is jammer.

Dit is verder gewoon een keyboard, niet met ingebouwde spelletjes of iets dergelijks. Dat hebben andere wel, maar dat kan ook juist weer afleiden bij het ontdekken van muziek, dus is wat mij betreft niet een must have.
